@StetsonSteve, Your daughter has to decide how important the quality of the home course is when deciding where to apply.
Holy Cross’ home course is the stunning Worcester Country Club. The course is designed by Donald Ross. http://www.goholycross.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33100&ATCLID=211159190
Ross also designed the renown Orchards Golf Club, which is Mount Holyoke’s and Smith’s home course. The Orchards hosted the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2002 NCAA Women’s Division III National Championships.http://www.orchardsgolf.com/
Unlike other NESCAC sports which have long traditions, women’s golf is relatively new. So it’s likely that unlike lax or soccer the level of play at Holy Cross will be much higher, if that’s the driver - no pun intended
@CrewDad, ok but with it only having been a NESCAC sponsored sport for women since 2015 and only having 6 schools fielding teams it’s still in the development stage.
That said, I don’t think golf student athletes in the NE are thinking about turning pro, so it’s all about the a academic and cultural fit like every other NESCAC or equivalent school.
Chembiodad. Those six are ones she’s interested in or who have expressed an interest in her. there are others who are interested but she isn’t interested in them. Mac is rebuilding right now and only had one golfer this year. Interesting to go help rebuild, but it is 1200 mi away, albeit she has a cousin going to UM down the road. LaSalle was a day trip to just check it out, expecting good, but we all came away stunned at how improved it is. Hamilton, Ithaca, HWS, and HC have been visited, she loved the HC and Ham campus and there is interest from those coaches. All things being equal (financial aid, etc) and assuming admissions isn’t much of a problem, the choice will likely be between those three but she has an interest in Intl Econ and Business which Mac is strong in. We just want her to find the place she’ll be most comfortable for 4 years, that she’ll be challenged academically and athletically, and has a great environment and alumni network. The goal of school is to find yourself and ultimately find a career, and all of the above schools seem like they prepare you for that.
@StetsonSteve, on another thread, I swore I would disconnect from CC as my twin DD’s are headed to Hamilton in August (one as a student athlete who will be studying political science and International Relations), my next DD wouldn’t graduate HS until 2022, and I have a day job - that said I’ll give you my two cents on this one;
Hamilton and Holy Cross have much different campus vibes than Macalaster as its a small, more urban campus.
As far as Economics programs go, Hamilton’s is one of the strongest in the country.
Definitely have her do Fall overnights at as many of the three as she can; my XC/Track DD did three, including Hamilton, another NESCAC school and a Centennial school, and found them really impactful - she came away knowing where felt like home and where didn’t.
