My husband and I will be taking our 11th grade son to visit a college this week. He's still tossing around two majors - so we called ahead and were really happy when professors from both departments were very willing to carve out a little time to talk to him/us about their programs. So, my question is......Is this an "interview"? Do only interviews with official admissions people "count"? I mean, do more informal meetings with teachers (at least one of these profs is the head of the department if that matters) have an impact on the admissions process for a student? It's a big(ish) school (=/-12,000) so will word of this meeting ever make its way to the admissions people? And finally, how would you suggest he dress? (The day will also include the standard info session and tour)

THANKS!

Based on what people with more experience than I have posted here is that it’s the interview with admissions that counts at the undergraduate level. The meeting with the professors is more of an incitement for the student to choose the school. My ds had several meeting with faculty when he visited colleges and it was more of the faculty talking about the department and opportunities.

I wanted him to wear at least a shirt with a collar but we settled for him tucking his t-shirt into his blue jeans. Even at this low standard, he was still better dressed than most who were wearing shorts and flip flops. The only places I saw students a little more dressed for interviews were as we hit some of the more well-known LACs in Pennsylvania. For what it’s worth, he was accepted at all the schools he applied to which did not include the ones in Pennsylvania.
