My son called the H.S. office today as he has a rolling admissions app that he really wants to get out. They told him they will not process anything until school begins (and then to expect two weeks for documents to be sent)...that is their policy and there are no exceptions. I did call to follow up, and the receptionist told me that lots of kids have been calling to try to get their rolling admissions apps in, and she is telling everyone the same thing which is "We had lots of kids wait until November and December last year and still got in, so you will be fine." It seemed a little pointless to tell her that last year may be unlike this year, and every student isn't the same, as she has no control over the process anyway.

How many other high schools have the same policy as ours?

If I remember correctly, my oldest son did all his apps on-line and hit submit. The transcript, recommendations and GC notes followed within several weeks after the school year began. My second son is planning the same course. He will have all his apps finished and submitted by very early in September and the school will most likely send “their stuff” by the end of September. Our school encourages kids to get as much done as possible by end of October, early November at the latest and once the school year starts they are geared to go. Our district offices are closed for the most part in July and are just now starting to gear up. They won’t even be close to full force until the fall sports start practicing next week and our kids don’t begin until after Labor Day. If I were to even be able to get ahold of the counselors or the their admin, I’m guessing our high school is so small they would help, but I think September is fine, too.

Our HS is the same, only I think it’s more like four weeks. You can submit the app, then get the GC stuff as it is availalbe.

But warning: Don’t get in too big of a hurry. I’ve posted about this before, but in all the versions of HS transcripts we received (two a year), there was at least one mistake on each one…AP classes not designated as APs, etc. Please take the time to review the transcript carefully before asking the GC to send it to schools. On my original post I heard stories of classes indicated as dropped that weren’t, even a grade of F that wasn’t.

Thanks for the advice about the transcripts. He got his unofficial one sent with his report card at the end of last year. If that one is correct, then wouldn’t the official one be? (The unofficial one doesn’t have his senior classes on it though…wonder if that gets added…)

He will be fine. really. It is probably best that way since they normally include the current course schedule with transcripts and schedules sometimes change early in the school year.
Let them finish up getting school started, then they can get the transcripts out.
Even with rolling admissions, September is really early.

Actually my son and I were “gathering” up website info late last night and a couple of his schools that don’t take the common app haven’t even posted the correct application yet.

It should be…but mistakes are mistakes and could be made any time. It will only delay you by one day to bring the transcript home, go over it, then turn in the transcript request form the next day.

It’s not unusual for kids to send in their apps and then follow up later with the transcripts and other paperwork that the GC needs to fill out. Our GCs think that any paperwork that they get in September is SOOO early that they are ecstatic! The first week or so after school starts is filled with schedule changes so that anything sent to the GC probably won’t get looked at until later.

I can’t answer your question regarding the policy, but it seems fairly normal as many schools have lots of scheduling conflicts, changes, etc. at the beginning of the year that need to be resolved asap.

If you are talking about the rolling app I’m thinking you might be, it will be fine. D’s app was dated the day she hit submit, not when the transcripts arrived. (She didn’t submit them until late Sept. as she had mono at the very beginning of the year. It was a full 5-6 weeks before she even asked the GC to send them.) You should still hear by mid/late October. The earliest I recall decisions for this school was late Sept. last year.

If your school ranks, the class rank could change from last May to September depending upon student attrition. (My son’s numerical rank after first semester freshman year was exactly the same as his final numerical rank. However, due to student attrition, he started out in the top 16% and ended up in the top 21%.)
