alan,

There are a lot of places where you could study violin and there are a lot of different policies regarding audition procedures. Some schools only have live auditions. At others a DVD may be required before a live audition in a prescreening round. At some, a DVD may be accepted in place of a live audition. Others will only allow you to do this if you live far away from the school or any of their other audition sites. There are a lot of different variations on what constitutes a valid audition but I have never come across a list of the type you requested. Making such a list would take a long time if you are considering all of the schools where it is possible to major in violin.

If you have some schools in mind, you should check their web site because audition procedures are usually listed and they will usually tell you if a DVD is required, optional or not used at all.

You might get a better response if you can tells us folks here on CC about where you live (not an exact address, just what city or town you live in or near) and give us some idea of the level of your playing. Would you be looking at places like Curtis, Juilliard, and the other very top programs, or are you a step or two down from there?

I am looking for schools which accept DVD as a replacement for live audition, not pre-screening.

I live in Hong Kong.

I don’t dream Curtis, but i am looking for schools have a slightly lower level, like Manhattan, CIM, Boston U, Peabody…

I prefer some schools who has full scholarship and accept students who are above 24 for bachelor degree.

You will be at a disadvantage for merit/talent scholarships if you only submit a DVD.

That could make things difficult. I have never heard of a full scholarship being awarded only on the basis of a recording, even to an 18-year-old domestic student. I think most schools would want to hear you in person before making that kind of offer.

Several schools with excellent music programs, including Eastman, Oberlin, Peabody and the University of Miami have a series of regional auditions in Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok every year in October. You can play one audition and it will be recorded and sent to all of those schools for review. If the school also receives an application from you, it will then consider the recording that they made your audition. This is different from your own recording in that you only get one shot at it rather than being able to pick the best of several takes or edit it from partial takes.

I do not know the age policy of any of these schools, you are probably going to have to research that yourself. Not many schools in the US provide substantial aid to international students, but Oberlin has been pretty good in that regard. Peabody is generally known for not providing much aid even to US citizens, although it occasionally will come up with a large scholarship for a student that they really want. I do not know much about financial aid at the other schools.

Given your location, the schools might well allow a DVD submission in lieu of a live audition even if their policies state otherwise or are nebulous. It would be prudent to speak directly to a music admissions officer in the early stages of planning at any school that interests you. They might have specific policies regarding international audition submissions, and it would not surprise me if they involved a preliminary prescreen submission, even if is not stated within the audition parameters as posted. Make sure you read any specific info for international students that appears.

Other than Curtis, the age limitation should not be a factor.

A full scholarship is not easy to come by. I concur with OperaDad’s assessment.

I would try to do regional auditions, as Bassdad suggests. A number of schools audition in multiple spots in Asia. We were specifically told that it was much harder to get scholarship money with just a CD. Full scholarships? They are very few and far between at top conservatories. If you want big money, you’d be best off looking at smaller, lower ranked LACs, or second/third tier publics with music programs, and even for these, you have to be among the very best auditioning (which can certainly vary).

We found through the audition process this year that even the schools who said they took DVD for auditions came back to us and “highly recommended” a live audition. Others simply stated they only accept live auditon for my d’s instrument…flute. We planned our schedules for travel thinking we would not have to go to some of these live auditions. I would contact the schools and ask.
As far as scholarships…do not give up hope! We were told by every school that it is “rare” for highly competitive instruments to recieve scholarships…they used flute as as and example of one of those instruments! My d’s friend recieve full scholarship from two of the top flute studios in the nation! Yes, she is incredible…gifted…but it can be done. ;)

You’re really asking about a particular set of criteria that most people who post on this forum don’t deal with. Your best course of action is to check the Web sites of the better music programs in this country. For a list, simply check http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/618208-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2009-a.html and you’ll get a good idea of the schools you’ll probably want to consider.

Alan,
