I was wondering if any boarding schools accepted students mid-year, after winter vacation. From what I've heard, not many, if any, do, but maybe there are some I haven't heard about? Not that I'm looking to apply mid-year, but it's an interesting prospect.

An ed consultant or AO could give you the best - most accurate - information.

The short answer to your question is that it is not unheard of, but it is not very common. If you are interested in this approach, your absolute best resource would be a good educational consultant. She/he could help you find the right school to meet your academic/athletic/etc goals. And she/he will also have an inside track with admissions and will know if a bed might be available at a school that may not have advertised openings.

The long winded answer…

The “top” schools fill up quickly - usually the first round of admissions is all they need to fill their class with the rare wait list candidate coming off in April/May/June.

There are other schools that do not fill their classes as fast - that is due to many factors.

Larger schools that are not quite as ‘popular’ as the big names may have more difficulty because they have more beds to fill and often try to be as selective as possible. Specifically, I am thinking of NMH - my understanding is that they do not always fill up their class in the first round and that is a decision of their own choosing. They are less interested in just filling beds and more interested in putting together a good class and know from years past that good candidates will come along late in the cycle. (Others that might fall in this category would be Williston Northampton, Kent, McCallie…)

Geography also has an impact on a schools ability to fill a class quickly. I’m thinking of places like Maine, NH, VT, GA, VA, CO, FL,TN - which often seem less ‘popular’ places to attend boarding school. In Tennessee there are some solid options —St. Andrews-Sewanee, McCallie, Bolles, Webb - not sure if all have rolling admissions or not. Georgia has a few gems tucked away as well - such as Rabun Gap Nacooche, Darlington, etc. Virginia has Randolph Macon, Virginia Episcopal…
There are more - look at the various states on Boarding School Review.

Academic reputation will also impact a schools ability to fill the class early. Schools that may be considered less rigorous - which most people determine by citing SAT scores, number of AP classes, % IVY matriculation- but at which you can still get a very good education. Remember, a lot of this process is what you put in to the experience. Schools that come to mind here are Kimball Union, New Hampton (which now has a solid IB program) - but there are others.

The most important thing really is finding a school that fits you and your goals/educational aspirations. If a school (or a few) that you like has rolling admissions then it would be good to keep in touch with the admissions office to see if a spot opens up. I recommend you don’t choose a school just based on who has a bed in January…unless your family/personal circumstances require that option.

I second what mamakiwi said. I believe that the big kahunas don’t do that-However, don’t take my word for this, but I do think that the Foxcroft School in VA does. (I believe this because one of the student profiles talks about a girl who entered in the middle of sophomore year.) Of course, this might not be very relevant, unless you’re a girl. (Which I am pretty sure you are.)

Speaking about something similar…for all you non-FA applicants, the Asheville school has an early decision admissions cycle!

Asheville is a really lovely school in a really interesting small city. I found the people there to be first rate.

It happens - but more often than not the student is a full pay, and transferring from one school to another. And more often than not, there are parent connections that made the transfer possible.

Interesting information here, thanks so much for replying!
Sounds like a bed opening up at a top BS isn’t quite likely. xD I’ll just stick to reapplying next year. :D
