Schools and Colleges question

I hope that someone can explain the relationship between the different schools and colleges at Syracuse. If a student is admitted into The College of Arts and Sciences does this mean that the student can only take classes in that college, or can the student also take classes in the School of Information Studies or The Newhouse School of Public Comminucation, etc.

Thanks!

You should carefully pick which school you apply to as they differ drastically in their quality and reputation and it is difficult to transfer from one to another once your are enrolled. You can take some courses in all schools and you can have minors or double majors in different schools. However, there are many courses reserved for degree candidates only. Every school has to take CAS courses (those are the liberal arts requirements). This is a big decision for your application - make it carefully. You can always transfer into CAS - it may be difficult to go from CAS to one of the other schools.

In terms of the schools and colleges within Syracuse itself, each varies dependent upon the specific area of study. There are different schools for different subjects…for example the School of Architecture. It is possible to hold a double major for certain areas, as well as having a minor in a subject.

The College of Arts and Sciences is different because it is a more broad school. Since you mentioned Newhouse, there are a couple of different approaches to take if a student is interested in this school. One can apply into Newhouse directly, of course. In this case, if the student is declined from this school, the second option would be to apply into the College of Arts and Sciences. From here, after a certain amount of credits taken within this school, synonomously upholding a certain GPA, the student can apply into Newhouse once again.
