I could not agree more or said it better than Lonestardad. As far as $ you never know, but I have read posts for a year re: Drexel and I do think you may get some.

Thank you SO much, lonestardad. Not only did you give me invaluable advice, I also thank you for making my day :). Wait until my mom hears this, haha. cue the comical gag concerning daughter and mother

And northeastmom, is there any trend as to aid from Drexel? It is pretty pricey and I'm worried about not killing the whole family over my college expenses.

Well I had just noted that students with B gpas (I did not keep track of weighted or unweighted) and hitting solid 1200+ were getting merit aid. That does not mean they all do by any means, just posts I have read along the way gave me this indication. It is expensive, and that is why you should have financial safeties like instate schools. You just simply do not know unless a school has a chart (ie:gpa and sat/act score and $ you can expect). There are a few schools that put it to writing on their websites. You sound like a very considerate person, caring not to burden your family.

Since I just "lost" my reply, I am giving you the shortened version. Check out West Chester U (WCUPA.edu) near Philadelphia. Has a social work program in the college of Business & Public Affairs. As it is a public U, the tuition is not too bad. Also if you like Philadelphia check out the website Onebigcampus.com. Lists several colleges in Philly area. My d is also interested in Temple and other schools near an urban area. We also checked out Virginia Commonwealth (VCU.edu) near Richmond. If you want any more info feel free to pm me. Good luck. I am trying to get my d to consider Montclair as I have seen the brochure and have been on the website. It looks very interesting and I know its pretty "commutable" to NYC area. For what ever reason, she does not like New Jersey, so we haven't gotten her to look at that campus yet.

I can honestly say that I've never heard of Quinnipiac being a party school in any way, and I'm a local. I can also say that just counting on my hands, I've had 12 friends attending UHart in the past few years who absolutely loved it. Don't base your decision regarding them on one person wanting to transfer. UHart has a very happy student body in general.

Thanks for the info, northeastmom...it's good to hear I might get some aid (on the site, I'm guess I might get something like 10 K) ...and yeah, my family has no funds for me or my brother (who wants to attend a culinary school...YIKES!) and so I'm trying not to go overboard.

As for marny, I suggest you give it another try with your daughter. I live about 5 minutes away from campus, although I have not had the pleasure to visit. Our junior advisor, and also a history teacher at my school, graduated from MSU. He is not only a WONDERFUL teacher, but he's also very passionate, very considerate, very hilarious. Quite a few seniors from this year are attending, and they are also very amiable.

Montclair is a gorgeous, fairly large town just north of my town...great shopping district (very cozy, but not ridiculously small) and I'm sure if you two visit, she'll love it.

And as for NJ, having lived here all of my life, it's not that bad (and if you live here as well, you'd know that.) Many parts are truly beautiful, and the people here are pretty amusing as well :).

And West Chester was a college I was looking into, but for sheer numbers, I have crossed it out (I have maybe 10 on my list as of now, and I need to crack down.) Seems nice and diverse, though :).

Beginning, haha pulling for UHart...I hope the info comes soon! And as for the friend you knew that attended...were any of them minorities?

could you pull off URM? if so your chances increase everywhere

Good question...would I be considered URM?

i believe its 1/4 of a race to be considered URM but im not sure...can anyone back me up?

I would sure hope so, it would help me IMMENSELY. Does anyone have any idea?

West Chester is also a very big party school. I know alot of folks who went there and ended up failing out.

As far as U Hartford what the story is that my friend took her D to see the school and they arranged to stay overnight in the dorms. The D spent a couple of days speaking to students in dorms and this is where she got the impression that there were unhappy students looking to transfer. It was not based on one student. It is true that there are students that transfer from all schools, so she may have just met an unsatisfied bunch.
Marny, I know of a student who began VCU last Sept. from NJ and loves it! She wants to be an art teacher. She gets home by and back to school by bus- she has another friend from NJ she travels with.

Marny, I know you and your daughter are considering other schools that sound more exciting than Montclair, so I would not worry about it if your D does not want to consider it. I tried to get my son to look at Manhattan College and he does not care to bcs it is affiliated, and he feels that he has enough choices not to have to see this school. I think we should keep an open mind and look, but if he does not want to it is fine with me. It has easy access to NYC (it is in Riverdale) and wonderful internship opportunities, and it would probably be a safety school for him. I decided to just let him decide whether he wants to look further or not. He has not expressed interest in the school so far.

I just graduated from William Paterson this past may so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Well, NeedsAJob05, how did you like it? I know alot of the students are commuters...is that any bother?

Oh, campuspig, I cannot really imagine myself going to a party school like that. Work hard, play hard. If you can't have both, why bother?

Northeastmom, how long did your daughter stay up there? Did you get a good look around campus?

Ack, could anyone give me a revised list of my schools? I mean matches, reaches, and safeties... I need another opinion on it:

UHart
Temple
Drexel
UMBC
Northeastern
Rutgers
Philadelphia U
William Paterson
Richard Stockton College of New Jersey
(I think) Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Thanks to everyone who has answered so far. It's been a real help!

sweetsaz79, it was my friend and her daughter who went to U Ha. I did not go. Actually, I have a son who is a rising senior, not a daughter. They either stayed one or two nights, and they definitely had a good look around and time to have meaningful conversation with some women on campus. Both the mother and daughter were disappointed in the school and the daughter opted not to apply. She is going to attend a Suny instead. I am sure there are students who like the school, it is all about the individual fit.

Taking a fresh look at this list today I would think that Rutgers and Northeastern are reaches (Rutgers being a reach/match) and the rest are matches and safeties.

What do you know about Bloomsburg?

Ooo, I didn't see that...my mistake lol. That's what I get for writing that right after I woke up.

And I know that there can always be a sour bunch of students in every school. My favorite aunt (haha, my other one is a Princeton grad and won't let you live without that knowledge!), a Rutgers alumni, didn't appreciate the schooling, and my mom liked Douglass enough, but dropped out because of my dad.

Thanks for looking at the list, also, northeastmom...very appreciated.

I'm still hung on the URM status...I know putting "Asian" on the form would probably not help me at all, but putting "African American" wouldn't be telling the whole truth.

Bloomsburg? I know it's basically in a really really really small town (10,000 people!) and there's only 9% minorities, but I hear it's a decent college....friendly student body.
