Schools for an average student wanting to go to average schools?

I wish I could help you with the minority status, but I am not sure what one would do. Can you check more than box? I would ask my GC or even call a few admissions offices and ask how this is handled. My guess is that they would tell you to check off the way you identify yourself; but if only one box is allowed then...

Well, I've previewed a couple of applications and they're all strict about it and only let you check one box. But in all reality, I know maybe three people that are only one race...very frustrating.

sweetsaz79---I have absolutely no idea about URM status-I'm so white, I am ghostly, but I did find this definition of URM on a web site concerning a breakdown of a census, maybe this will help decide. Also, I think your guidance counselor OR an admissions officer might help with this designation? MAybe? Just trying to be helpful, I am totally clueless, but anyway here's the definition................................ ** URM (Under Represented Minority) includes U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents who indicate Black, Am Ind/AK Native, Nat Hawaiian race or Mex Am, PR Mnlnd ethnicity in combination or alone. Non-URM includes unknown.

I think the in combination part may be a clue here....thoughts?

Also, based on all of the things you do outside of your academics be sure to look at schools with a very active student body. Go to the web sites and see if they have clubs and/or organisations you would want to join AND don't dumb down just cause you are afraid you can't get in---they can't take your birthday away! Have you done the college match and scholarship search with Fastweb.com yet? That can be helpful

sbarrytown, I haven't looked at that...good looking out :). I liked the ghostly comment as well haha.

URM status counts for mixed kids? YES! lol. Even though my Native American portion is probably like 5%, I am 25% black...crosses fingers

And if I do qualify, isn't that a whole 'nother playing field? I remembered seeing some kids around here with an 1150 and people were saying, "With URM status, that's impressive." I couldn't believe it!

Bump and a little side note:

UHart sent me something (hey, it was dated before I had inquired, yay!) and it said something about waiving my app. fee and whatnot. Should I take this with a grain of salt?

/Usually/ if you get a waiver, it means they really like you and want you to apply. There are few schools that send them automatically to everyone on their mailing list. I would say it's a good thing.

Well the only reason I would take this with a grain of salt is because it was something about their DVD and then they, probably knowing noone would immediately ask for the DVD, said "we'll waive the fee if you do".

I don't know if the same rules apply now. haha

Thanks alot, romy...great site!

I'm the same as you stat wise, and spent a lot of time researching colleges.

Here are my safeties: University of Nebraska, and Iowa State. I know you can get into those.

They would be great, but I'm afraid of going "outward"...I'd miss the Atlantic Ocean and everything about the east coast.

What are your stats, exactly?

2.8(UW) 21 ACT

I have really good EC's but that doesn't matter.

Here is the chart.

http://www.admissions.iastate.edu/freshman/fresh_adm_req2.php

Woah...didn't get a good vibe off of that link. It just seems like they mean, "Oh. Well...I guess we'll look at you, even though we probably won't". I've never visited a site that had a chart like that.

21 ACT? That's equal to a 970? Won't that hurt you? (I'm not trying to be mean.) I wouldn't say we're the same statwise but similar, as I have a higher SAT/ACT, but you probably have better ECs.

And, I'm from New Jersey, and my family is everything to me...moving out to Iowa, where I have no friends or family, is a scary thought. At least in Connecticut and Baltimore I have family.

Pretty sure that UHart sends a waived application thing only to kids it is interested in....
Our son received one last year and also invite to early nonbinding audition to the Hart School. He was accepted with merit $$$ but ultimately decided to attend elsewhere.
UHart definetely has $$$ for those they want.

Did it have the DVD thing on the front? I'm kind of wary of that part...it's like those AOL discs you get all the time in the mail.

The initial letter did not have the DVD but we received one in a followup mailing.
It was a superficial overview of the campus....not too informative.

I found the UHartt campus kind of sad and a bit dreary when we visited. But that could have been because it was summer and HOT and kind of lacking students on campus.
Our son didn't have that take though, said it was fine.

Musicmom, I was thinking as such...the DVDs are always that way.

Where did your son end up going?

You are definitely a minority - check "other" box and list your ethnicities.

Also, re: UHart. Know two kids who go there and really like it. have another friend transfering there from Lawrence because her music professor is shifting over to teach there. Apparently, good music dept.

Yes, they have the Hartt School, one of the best music/theatre programs in the country. It's extremely competitive to get accepted to Hartt.
