Schools for Biological Sciences

I'm thinking about going into Microbiology, Genetics, or Medical Science. What are some reach schools that I should consider applying for, or even some lesser-known schools that are really good for those subjects?

If you’re really into genetics, one lesser known school is BU, which offers a general program in genetics.

Also, check this list out: <a href=“Colleges With Great Biology Programs | CollegeXpress”>http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/lists/list/colleges-to-consider-if-you-want-to-study-biology/117/

One of the things that I’ve been really interested in studying recently is mitochondrial genetics. Do you think I should be following a program like that in genetics, or should I focus more on microbiology if I want to go into that type of research?

You could go either way, really - I don’t know how much BU offers when it comes to mitochondrial genetics, though. Another college I probably should have name-dropped is Baylor, which has genetics classes and top-rate genetics laboratories. It seems like a good safety school for you. (Also, without knowing your stats, I don’t know what would qualify as a reach or safety!)

Thanks! I’ll look more into them, and find out more about the programs.

I just have to mention one more school, because this is one that I really left out and shouldn’t have - check out Grinnell. While I’m not sure if they’ll have microbiology or genetics programs, their science facilities and faculty are absolutely top-notch, and the ability to do undergraduate research in the sciences there is really fantastic, according to everything I’ve heard. In fact, I don’t have the article on me right now, but I remember reading about how Grinnell undergrads could often get more research opportunities than those at top-tier universities.

That actually sounds really nice. I’d really love a research opportunity like that!
