schools for classical guitar

A young lady at my ds's high school wants to study classical guitar. She has been accepted at our local U and is also looking into Vanderbilt and Tulsa. Any schools you could suggest? I offered Pepperdine to her, but she had not even heard of it! Isn't Christopher Parkening still there? I was just hoping I could offer her some additional ideas.

I heard that Curtis has just added classical guitar.

Schools I know of that are good for classical guitar: Ithaca, Hartt at U. of Hartford, Bennington, Oberlin, NEC. There are many others, so that is just off the top. If you search for threads on this, there was a recent one, or at least in the last few months. I seem to remember posting info on the schools I knew a little about, including teachers. My info is limited so others will add more.

Glad to hear Curtis has added it.

Check on Hartt. I read that either they have already fazed out the classical guitar program or that they are in the process of doing so.

Does anyone know what happened with the threat of cutting the program?

Here is a description of the program, the oldest in the country:

And here are google results concerning the possible end of the program, with an apparent plea for help and advocacy last fall:

I did a search for classical guitar but didn’t find anything super recent. I clicked on your link, but got “no matches” as a message. I only searched directly on the music majors forum board. I did get some matches but the original threads were a bit older.

In the music world - threads that are a year, or even older, are still relevant - even though specific teachers may have moved, or programs cut or added as in Hartt and Curtis. Check out this thread from last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/163968-best-schools-classical-guitar.html</a></p>

Sorry about that link - I tried it once myself and it worked. Spirit Manager inserted the link for the best classical guitar thread.

Here’s a more recent thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1320408-classical-guitar-major.html</a></p>

I spoke to the admissions office at Hartt 2 weeks ago because my DD (junior) is interested in another major that they are thinking of cutting (pre-cantorial) and they said that they would know by the middle of January what was and wasn’t going to be cut.

The Thornton School of Music is over 125 years old. It has a long established classical guitar department as well as jazz and studio guitar. Christopher Parkening received his Bachelor of Music in 1969 at USC and then taught classical guitar there for some years.

The department chair of classical guitar is now Brian Head. He has been a recording artist with Delos, Denon and Digital Revolution. He has performed with the New World Symphony and other symphonic groups and has played at venues across the country.

Pepe Romero is also on the classical guitar faculty. He has performed worldwide for Prince Charles, Pope John Paul II and was knighted by Spain. He has been a soloist with the London, New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia Symphonies.

Grammy Award winner, Scott Tennant, is a founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quintet and the author of “Pumping Nylon” among other writings. He won 1st Prize at the Tokyo International Guitar Competition and is known for his interpretations of Spanish guitar music.

William Kanengiser is another Grammy Award winner on the classical guitar faculty. He has won major international competitions as well as two grants from the Natinal Endowment for the Arts. Kanengiser has been the teacher of Mak Grgic, the Slovenian classical guitarist, who made his debut with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and has received excellent revues for his recent performances in the U.S.

Thornton is located in a huge entertainment center. A unique feature of Thornton is the interaction among the students in Thornton, the USC School of Dramatic Arts, Roski School of Fine Arts and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Adding to these art schools will be the Kaufman School of Dance in 2014.

Thanks for all the replies! I fear I may be a day late and a dollar short asking for this young lady as she is a senior this year (my ds is only a junior).
