Hi all! I'm currently a high school senior gearing up my college search. I was wondering if anyone who's went to college for IT has colleges to recommend? Rochester Institute of Technology seems to be my #1 choice so far, but I was also looking at Rensselaer, Stevens, and Worcester.

as part of your college search, run the net price calculators for each school and see what your parents might have to pay.

for our purposes, could you better explain what you mean by IT? what is it you intend to do in IT?

Well I intend to deal with Server/Networking Infrastructure, Databases, Support Services, amongst the many other things that an IT person can do.

Managing computers and their software, or designing computers and their software?

IT/MIS/IS/CIS* majors are typically business based, with some technical content focused on managing computers and their software. This is in contrast to CS** majors, which are mainly technical and focused on designing computers and their software.

Where the S is “systems”.
*Where the S is “science”.

CS or IST at RIT are all great programs. The Golisano school at RIT is very well respected.

Most kids interested in ‘computers’ go to school not really knowing enough to really know what disciplines they are interested when they are picking a major. As a result, if the kid isn’t interested in attending a Liberal Arts School, I often recommend selecting a school with multiple disciplines that will allow them to change focus if their understanding of the program they initially selected was not what they thought it would be.

All of the schools you listed are great schools. Take the time to visit them all and find the one that really seems like a good fit for you.

Managing computers and their software. The business side of things concerning using technology to help a company, rather than actually designing software/apps. So definitely Information Systems/Technology or any major around that area. I’m sure this is what I want to do as I currently work as an IT intern at Creditsafe USA, Inc. and I really enjoy the work. I enjoy more the hardware and application of software side of things rather than actually designing said software to use.
