Schools For Journalism (Not in the east coast)

Ive limited by University search to the East coast because it is what im familiar with (New York, Pennsylvania, Mass., New Jersey) but I dont want to limit myself to this region because I guess there can be more opportunities elsewhere.

Im looking for colleges that are diverse. Im blatino, so I would like it to be a good amount of latinos and blacks. Thats why Ive stuck with the east coast because most of the Universities ive checked on, are diverse.

Im not looking for an Ivy school. Im looking for a decent priced school in which a New Yorker like myself wont feel like an outkast. Money is a big concern.

I also know that many schools are hard on out of staters. Its harder for us to get accepted. But I KNOW there has to be colleges with a decent number out "out of staters".

Another reason why I limited myself to New York and such is because the field/career I plan to study is really big in the area, so its a lot easier to get jobs/internships rather than someone who is in for example...St. Louis.

Any suggestions?

what is your GPA and SAT (or ACT). Although there are many other factors, this will help put us in the ballpark of what schools should be suggested.

Not on the east coast for journalism?

Northwestern...Definately...Private school, so they can provide you the financial need you are looking for and they are argued to have the top program in the country.

University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill...Out of State Admissions is brutal but your minority status should help as long as your stats are within their top 40% (11% of the school is black which is a HIGH number among major universities and they are aggressively looking for Latino/a applicants, so you definately have a chance)

University of Missouri...State School...If you're at the top of the applicant pool, you'll probably get decent aid

USC...Another Private School with strong communications

You mention St. Louis -- and the first and best journalism school in the US is in Missouri. Suggest very strongly that you apply there. The OSS costs will be minimal and you won't feel out of place eventhough you're in between the prairie and the Ozarks and halfway between two large cities, KC & St. Louis.

Second USC both for print journalism and communications plus it's an extremely diverse school: 21% Asian/Pacific Islanders, 7% African-American, 13% Hispanic, 9% international. Plus, it likes students from the east coast. If you have the credentials big money is available.

http://afaweb.esd.usc.edu/dcpage.cfm?PageBaseID=50340

Northwestern, Missouri, and Kansas are the best schools for journalism in the midwest. Northwestern is pretty diverse, but Missouri will have smaller minority populations. U Kansas is is very diverse by KS standards, but incredibly white to anyone from either coast. So your interest in these schools would probably depend on your comfort level. MU and KU will also be cheap cheap cheap compared to private schools and a lot of state schools.

USC is also good, if you have the stats.

My gpa is about 3.0-3.3 at the moment. I intend on working on that. I have yet to take the SATs because I have been studying in the carribean for the past 2 years. Im taking them this year.

A lot of the schools yall mentioned seem really good (USC) but they're dead expensive.

Santo: I can agree about the expense. I know from first hand experience. Sorry, but unless you get extremely high SATS/ACT scores your GPA is going to make it hard for you to get into USC. In your advantage though is being an easterner and studying in the Carribean.

Maybe I should just stick to my area. lol

You definately owe it to yourself to check a few of these schools out. I don't know to much about journalism, but I do know at little about KU. They pride themselves on their diversity, though it may still not be what you're used to (86% White). I have talked to a few KU students who came to Kansas from NYC, and said they felt right at home at KU. It's also fairly cheap.

From the university website:

"The University of Kansas is a public university having more than 29,000 students on all its campuses. These students come from all 50 states and more than 100 nations, although two of every three are from the state of Kansas."

In other words, almost 10,000 students aren't from Kansas, so you wouldn't be alone there.

Some info on journalism:

http://www.journalism.ku.edu/

Just trying to give some info, not trying to force my school on you or anything!

Looks very interesting,

The only problem I would have with the college is that its all the way in Kansas, I place I have never visited in my life.

And being that NY is the entertainment center of the United States...I kind of dislike the fact that I would spend 4 years hundreds of miles away from New York and then graduate only to move back to NY to find a job in the field.

But everything Ive researched on it is very, very good.

Missouri is probably the top journalism school in the nation and it's not too far from St. Louis and Kansas City. Moreover it's journalism school probably has a more geographically and culturally diverse student body then KU. One of my best friends is Mexican American and he is attending Missouri for journalism. Another Hispanic girl from my high school went to Missouri in another dept. but seems to be very happy with it.

Which one in Missouri are yall reffering to? The Columbia campus?

Yes, the Columbia campus

Northwestern's school is better than Missouri's....

But Northwestern costs an arm and a leg. :-/

Medill @ Northwestern is to journalism what Yale Law is to Law. It is unquestionably the leading school in its field.

Medill was racked with admin problems and I think the dean was canned recently. Not all that anymore.

And the price is ridiculous.

U know of any in the Virginia area?
