Schools for me

Hi, I’m currently a junior and I’m trying to figure out what colleges I should look at. Cost isn’t really an issue for me, so I won’t need financial aid. I am interested in economics, business, and some other topics too. Regarding other aspects that I’m looking for, I would like a college with big sports, but not too big of a school (4,000-14,000) undergrad. I’ve taken every AP and honors class available at my school and am ranked around 10% for unweighted gpa. I have scored a 34 on the ACT. Thankd.

BC (Carroll) and ND (Mendoza) are similar Northwest (I know someone is going to say that ND isn’t in the Northwest, but close enough) schools with very good business programs
NW can be a reach and doesn’t have business specifically but do have industrial engineering (more mathematical apps of business)
Clemson is a little on the big side for you, but it is worth a look

Long story short, BC and ND, Clemson, Northwestern, in that order. Good luck!

Thanks @Nojotennis

Any thoughts on the ivies?

Or any other schools?

Villanova, your state flagship’s honors program, UVermont, Michigan, UVA, Miami-Ohio, Dickinson (smaller than you wish but good for what you’re interested in).

Of course you can apply to Ivies and NESCAC, but you don’t need us to figure out which ones match what you’re interested in. Those are “dream schools”, they’re not really “work”; the hard part is finding two safeties you know you can get into, have a 40-45% acceptance rate, are affordable, and that have characteristics you like, then 3-5 colleges that you think you can get into, have a 30-35% acceptance rate, are affordable, and that you like.

Even though you don’t qualify for financial aid, run the NPC on some colleges listed on this page and bring the paper to your parents to make sure that they’re as willing as able to pay the net costs.

Thanks @MYOS1634. My family has done a net price calculator and we sadly don’t qualify. My parents are willing to pay for any school if it’s my best option.

These responses are great, everyone! Does anyone else have an idea on other schools? It’s really helpful.

You have to run the NPC on every college because they all calculate differently. Not that you’ll qualify necessarily but you need to do it for each college.
Make sure your parents don’t plan on borrowing.
But all in all, it’s good that you’ve already discussed costs and you’re lucky they can afford 250k

Thanks!

Duke, Wake Forest, Georgetown, UMiami (FL) and Tulane

Before you pick out colleges, you should consider if want to study economics or attend a b-school as an undergraduate. Economics and a b-school are two different paths – one is not better than the other but they are different. Economics is a liberal arts course of study and gets theoretical at the higher levels. In a b-school you will take a business core with intro level classes in subjects such as accounting, finance, IT, marketing etc. and then you will major in one of those disciplines. You should look up the curriculum for b-school and economics at a couple of the schools you are considering and see if one path is more appealing to you than the other. Most colleges have economics majors, not all have undergrad b-schools.

That said I also though of BC and ND as well as Gtown, Villanova, Cornell, Lehigh

Maybe go through this list and see what jumps out at you.

Thanks so much everyone for the answers! I’ll definitely look at these schools.

If you want a smaller college that would probably be in the “safe” range for you, consider Davidson in NC, especially if you’re interested in banking and finance. They are located near Charlotte, which is now the second-largest financial center (after NYC), and have a legendarily strong alumni/ae network for internships and employment. Their basketball team is very strong considering how small a college they are. Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business will provide opportunities in the NYC business world, as well. Other Catholic colleges like Villanova, Holy Cross,Notre Dame, and Georgetown would also satisfy most of your demands.
Michigan is an obvious option, but don’t rule out Indiana as a less-selective choice - its business school is very good. USC and Pitt are possibilities, and Temple might be a good safety for you.

Thanks @woogzmama!!! Does anyone have any match schools for me?

William and Mary, Lehigh, U Richmond

I second clemson. They obviously have the sports factor, and they’re barely above your desired undergrad population. With your act, you’d likely get a merit scholarship too. Michigan, Northwestern, UVA, UNC, and maybe USC also. Sounds like you want the big school feel, maybe even public, with good academics.

West Coast: Santa Clara University, Lewis and Clark, U Puget Sound (run the NPC as they don’t meet need)
Dickinson, Connecticut College, Trinity, Skidmore, Fairfield

Thanks guys!! I can’t believe how many responses this is getting! I’ve gotten so many good suggestions and will check these out soon.

@perspectivestude
Lehigh has a strong business program, D1 sports, about 5,000 undergrads and about 7,000 total students.
Last year’s middle 50% admitted student range was 30-33 on ACT.
