Schools for Philosophy

I'm thinking of schools for philosophy, but my grades aren't the best. I know of philosophy gourmet, but besides those schools listed, I was wondering about University of Puerto Rico. Philosophy gourmet suggest looking at profs' alma mater to verify qualifications and background. The profs. at UPR have gotten their PhD's from the following schools:
-New School for Social Research.
-Goethe Universit

Anyone have any advice, suggestion, or comments?

Hmm

First of all, congratulations for your interest in philosophy! it takes a lot of courage to study something that is sneered upon by so many. it is an extremely interesting discipline and i wish you lots of success

as for philosophy departments, I think columbia's and nyu's are considered the best, but you said your grades aren't the best.

if i were you i would look at liberal arts colleges, and particularly the strength of their philosophy departments. the alma maters of professors is a good indicator, but i would also look at the size of the departments. a LAC with a large philosophy department must pay a lot of attention to that and would therefore be good for it.

Most LACs would be good for philosophy.

ALSO, I would look at Catholic schools, schools like Boston College, Fordham University, Notre Dame, etc. Catholic education puts a big emphasis on philosophy and I'm pretty confident all Catholic schools have a good philosophy dept.

Thanks. I checked out some Catholic universities, but I don't know much about them and don't know which one's have good reputations. Cost is also an issue.

Thanks for the list. I Went over them and googled some. But many seem too competitive. Even if I could get in, I doubt I would receive any scholarships, which I would depend on.

Does anyone mind commenting on going from UPR(undergrad - Philosohpy) to Fordham for law school? That's one of my main concerns.

If you're open to Catholic schools, DePaul in Chicago has an excellent philosophy department and is generous with merit money. As for your question, I'd suggest you (1) as UPR directly what their placement rate is for mainland law schools and (2) check with Fordham whether there would be any issue with coming from UPR (I suspect there will not be one if your LSAT is high enough).

Good luck!

Thanks, I never taught of doing that. I'll email them and check DePaul out.
