Schools for screenwriting

I’m currently a high school senior who is geared towards programs in film/TV. I am not 100% set on screenwriting specifically, but it’s where I think I would likely end up given my interest in the writing aspect of the world behind the screen. For that reason, I enrolled in a screenwriting program (3 weeks, no credits) this summer that was set at (not organized by) UCLA and I enjoyed my short time there. We weren’t able to go into great depths, but it was nice to actually be engaged in a screenwriting class, as my school doesn’t offer any of the kind. I’m not sure where my attention is best directed in terms of colleges. I know UCLA, USC, and NYU come up a lot as highly regarded film schools, but they are also incredibly and intimidatingly selective.

I have a 4.0 GPA and 27 ACT score. I don’t have any experience in film, which I know is not always necessary. Therefore, any portfolio of mine would consist of only writing samples. I don’t have any awards and I haven’t been able to participate in any kind of film club or school newspaper. I’ve taken some classes that pertain to art/video/writing, including Journalism, Creative Writing (Fiction), Intro to Art, and Digital Video, along with the screenwriting program I attended for a few weeks. I have done some minor volunteer work. No sports, but I have acted in two plays. I won’t be dependent on financial aid.

Given this information, what schools would you recommend that might be within reach? Thanks for any help that you can provide!

@threefinalwords, check out Emerson in Boston. They have an LA semester which is supposed to be pretty cool. And they would accept your writing portfolio no problem.

Here are the stats per College Navigator:

Good luck!
