School's GPA scale lower than normal? HELP

Hey guys.

So I was checking my transcript the other day and I noticed that I was given only 3.0 points for a class I got a 92 in. Checking around on google and looking at various GPA scales (including one on Collegeboard.com) it seems that a 3.0 for a 92 was lower than it should be. Consequently, the rest of the values are also lower than all the GPA scales I've looked at.

Could this affect my chance of getting into a good university/college since my GPA I guess is lower than it should be (if I'm right) , or do the school recalculate the grades into their scales?

and by schools recalculating grades I mean colleges/ universities

Your Secondary School Report (SSR) will contain a school profile in addition to your transcript. The school profile will explain your school’s grading scale.

I agree, most schools would call a 92 an A, A-, or EVEN B+…but not a straight B (3.0).

BUT, that is “most schools”. And colleges know that every high school grades differently. It’s already been mentioned that your high school will explain their grading scale but hopefully they also RANK you (some don’t). THAT will also help the college know how you fare against your peers (even more than the GPA does).

Colleges not only know that different schools grade differently they know , generally, how your school grades. Your school should send a school profile with your transcript, as mentioned already. The SSR contains text/numbers/charts/graphs. It will describe your school in general , broad terms . ( ABC high is a large urban school. ) And it will describe your school in specific terms. (ABC high draws from several diverse populations - first generation immigrants, diplomats , blue collar and government service.) The grading system will be described and charted. The number of AP and other high level classes will be given. And finally, college admissions staff know about schools in their regions. Obviously, they can’t know everything about every school, but they may well know something about yours. The staff may know your current or past counselors too.

And that is one of the reasons class rank is important. Students in your school have the same grade cutoffs so those are normalized across the student body.

Wow, ok that makes me feel very relieved. I had no idea they sent that information to the schools and was perplexed by how the deal with this stuff but that makes perfect sense. It also feels good to know that maybe my 3.68 GPA maybe is more competitive than other higher GPAs that top colleges demand.

The bad thing about my school is that usually the top ten percent of every class is made up of kids that are in the IB program and whose every single class is weighted on a 6 point scale. Do you think colleges take that into consideration as well when looking at rank? (I’m in the top 15% and take IB classes mixed with AP classes and some honors so my weighted isn’t as high as those who are full IB)

Again thanks for all the great information.

I would go to your guidance counselor and ask about the grade and the grading system in a very pleasant non-confrontational way (saying something like “I’m a little puzzled about something on my transcript, maybe you could help me with it”). There can definitely be mistakes on a transcript and I think it would be worth a brief discussion to make sure you understand how things work in your school and whether there have been any mistakes made.
