Schools? High grades, high need, Engineering major

If you think this kid has scored 710 on the math SAT completely without support of any sort, and his high school isn’t supportive either, a Hail Mary to some place like Cornell or Princeton or Yale (trying to beef up science) might not be a bad thing.

^^ I agree but the 710 isn’t enough on its own, it also depends on what else he’s done and what personal obstacles he’s overcome, and how.

^^^
Oh, absolutely. It’s the score in context. A 710 for kid A is better than a 790 for kid B.

You may want to look into aid possibilities at Purdue. Purdue has a really strong co-op program. When I attended undergrad there a few of my friends did engineering co-ops.

A couple of sleepers in the Midwest that meet 100% of demonstrated with 3+2 engineering programs are St. Olaf in MN (Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., or the University of Minnesota) , and Grinnell in IA (Columbia University, California Institute of Technology, Rensseleaer Polytechnic Institute, and Washington University).
