i really want to go to Cali for college, so any suggestions would be nice.

some of my stats:

gpa: 4.0 UW/4.3 W
SAT: 1300
rank: top 4%
ECs: don't feel like listing, but they're average.

i want a school that's medium sized or larger (undergrad population is at least 3,000) solid academics, and a great social scene (or at least decent) i'm not completely sure what i want to major in, but i'm interested in communications or business.

You're going to have to look mostly at private schools
I'd recommend the following
Public
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara- may be a reach

Private
USC
University of San Diego
Santa Clara
Pepperdine (be aware that it's a religious school)

If you improve your SAT's check out the Claremont colleges. Individually, they are small, but when you put them together, it's like one decent sized college.

Other schools that aren’t quite as good academically as the others
University of San Francisco
Chapman
University of Redlands
Loyola Marymount

SouthernCharm, I disagree with worldchanger about the UC's all being "reaches" for you. If you're interested in a social life at an academically excellent University that is a good match for your academic achievements, I'd suggest a look at UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz. The UC standards for admission are spelled out pretty clearly on the systemwide and campus websites. UC isn't a bargain for out of state students, but I noticed that my son at UCSB had a lot of out of state classmates in his dorm last year. If you 've gotten all A's with a few AP or IB classes in your transcript, and your very decent SAT's, you look like a good candidate for UCSB. But they do require two SAT subject tests as well as the basic SAT.

Another school you might look at is San Diego State. You'd be towards the top of their admissions class with your GPA, but the business department in particular is strong there. Big school, huge social scene - and not quite as expensive for out of state as the UC's. (It is a 15 minute drive to the beach, however, unlike UCSB, which is a 2 minute walk.)

Yes, she would have a chance at schools such as UCSB or UCSC with her stats, I was just warning her that getting into UCs OOS is extremely competitve.
