I am in the process of applying to schools at the moment. I intend to study classical vocal performance but I want to stay in California. I am looking more for a traditional school than for a conservatory. Does anyone know which schools in California would have strong programs in this area?

I don’t know anything about vocal programs, but the some of the best music depts in California include:

USC
UCLA
Colburn School
CA School for the Arts
UCSB

Have a look at Chapman U and Bob Cole Conservatory at Long Beach State.

CSUN CSU Fullerton, San Francisco Conservatory

Colburn, as Cosmos mentioned, is a great school but they do not offer a BM in VP at this time. UCSB does not really have a strong voice program. UCLA, USC, and San Francisco Conservatory probably have the strongest programs at this moment. And CSUN, Fullerton, Long Beach and Chapman are nice options as well.

UCLA and Chapman have strong vocal departments. I’m having trial lessons at both next week so I’ll post again if I have any further insights about their programs and faculty.

Chapman has a better undergraduate music program than most but the administration of the college terrorizes the students with arbitrary dictates, related to fees, housing and classes. One of my friends is ready to drop Chapman out of frustration with the school.

Univ of Redlands has been very good to son. His vocal performance friends have been happy. Wouldn’t hurt to check it out.

Thank you.
Does anyone know about the program at UC Irivine?

Robin Buck at UCI has an excellent reputation. We haven’t met him. Facilities at UCI are excellent. What I don’t know is what is happening there with vocal performance in general. This past year Irvine did not accept applications for voice, I’m wondering what their plans are for the future.

Barclay Theatre at UC Irvine is the main hall of a very attractive and active performing arts center, and I believe it is an important cultural hub in the entire Orange County/Anaheim area.

I did find out from the voice faculty at UCI that they do expect to accept applicants in voice for Fall 2010. This past year they simply had too many current students, and couldn’t find room for more. They will be updating the website next month. I don’t anticipate too many openings, though, since the program has approximately 30 voice majors in total.
