D is interested in transferring to Columbia in Chicago. Her father and I are concerned about the quality of this school. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge? She is going to major in graphic design. She very much wants to be in the city. Is any school other than SAIC worth considering?

My daughter toured Columbia along with SAIC. She was concerned that there was kind of a “sales pitch” quality to the tour, especially at the end. I have seen Columbia’s alumni magazines that look pretty good, but I don’t know how much is hype and how many students they actually place and are gainfully employed. That being said, my niece graduated form there with a degree in radio broadcasting, has worked at several radio station including some major ones in Chicago. She also teaches there, and all-in-all, had an amazing career. SAIC was awesome, great location, nice dorms in nearby high rises, but as an illustration/children’s book major, the program was too conceptual and fine arts based for her.

If she is only interested in Chicago, those are the only 2 schools I know anything about. If she is interested in other large metro midwest cities, I can speak about MCAD and KCAI.
