Schools in Florida???

Parent2Noles those averages you post cannot be compared because they are misleading. for starters we do not know what the UF and UM averages you post are exactly. are they the commited or accepted. Its convenient for a die hard FSU lover like yourself to assume that they are the accepted student's averages because in that case FSU averages appear to be closer if not higher than the UF and FSU averages. Moreover those averages are quite meaningless as to the selectivity of the schools. having a high average such as FSU does does not mean they are selective because those are the averages of those who decided to commit not the ones the school decided to accept. the difference between the commited students averages and the accepted students at FSU is atronomical and frankly makes me suspicious of the accuracy of that article where you got those numbers. try finding that number in a Common Data Set where FSU has to report accurate numbers.
my point it, if u cant find those numbers in a CDS, then they are not accurate.

We do know several facts for certain without any confusion.
Admissions:

You can find these numbers in the recent Common Data Set for all three schools.

Acceptance Rate:
UMiami: 38%
FSU: 55%

Sat Score ranges:

UM: 1180-1370
FSU: 1090-1270

GPA:
UM: 74% had GPA of 3.75 and higher
FSU: 39% had GPA of 3.75 and higher

Class Rank:
UMiami: 65% in top tenth of graduating class
FSU: 24% in top 10th of graduating class

After looking at these numbers, I realize how low FSU stands in selectivity and how odd the numbers Noles posts from an FSU article appear to be as they are nowhere to be found other than in that article.

This is what I think ...
Admission speaking : UF > UM > FSU ~ UNF (depends)> USF> UCF(really easy to get in)
Academically speaking : Dunno ... But UF, UM and FSU are known for their academics as well as party lol. UF is probably the best in FL for its Medical program. Other majors are great as well. I might be a little bit bias since I'm attending there .

UNF however is a really good school. It's a small school with pretty high average GPA. I heard it's a pretty good school, but Jacksonville is boring lol >.> . So if you don't mind living in a boring city...

Good schools don't usually meet in hotel lobbies to accept people on the spot..

LOL, UNF = FSU and above USF and UCF. Thats a good one. UNF is the last one on that list.

Common Data Sets lag the current data. The data is reasonably accurate.

SAT scores

FSU: 1265 (committed to attend students) See: FSU Highlights -average-
U Miami: 1275 (likely "accepted" students and thus higher than reality) See: University of Miami Fact Finder 2007 - 2008 | University of Miami -average-
U Florida: 1280 (post drop-add - Fall 2007 - (1190+1370/2)) See: [url=http://www.ir.ufl.edu/fall.htm]Office of Institutional Planning and Research - UF Factbook/url

Well, the thing is, I've seen a lot of people with lower than 1000 SATs got accepted to USF and UCF , and those people got rejected from UNF.
People who got accepted to UNF I've known so far have at least 1150+ on SAT and UNF is pretty selective for people who's not local for some reason, unlike UCF , where almost everyone who applied got accepted ...

To be honest, I'd say UWF is the worst in FL, then UCF is like the next one after that.

I know UNF is not = to FSU of course whether you're talking about size, location or the admission process, but I've had friends who've gone there and said that the education offered there is pretty good.
Then again, this is my personal opinion, if you find it entertaining xD thanks.

parent2noles ... Honestly? Keep dreaming. The post by gocanes makes a lot of valid points. Okay, so, let's just pretend for a minute that the SAT scores for FSU, UM, and UF are really 1260, 1275, and 1280, respectively, like you have been saying. If this is true, then PLEASE explain to me why/how FSU is ranked more than 70 places behind UM and UF? There must be a lot of problems going on up there in Tally...

I'm not doing this to support FSU or any other schools' cause but the US News rankings are highly flawed and subjective. If you determine how good a school is solely by its rank then you are closed minded and ignorant. No, I'm not calling you, lylbeachbabee, that, just making a point. There is more to a school than its so-called "rank". The best school for anyone is where they fit in the best.

4orce is correct - plus, those rankings are based on 2006 data. The purpose of my multiple posts on this subject is to let everyone know there has been a dramatic ramp-up in scores and demands at FSU for admission.

As an FSU alumnus, this parity ( Miami, UF and FSU) existed when I attended in the 1970s. In the 1990s FSU was forced to admit a much larger number of students and averages decreased. Now, with the cutback in freshman admissions FSU's FTIC averages are back up. I don't see this status changing in the foreseeable future.

The message is simple - if you want to attend Florida State University you'd better meet the current averages otherwise your chances of being rejected are quite good. Be prepared.

The value of an education at FSU (and UF, for that matter) is excellent for the cost of tuition and other living expenses. This outstanding value will stimulate demand and demand means competition.

The competition has already dramatically increased in about one year.

You can cite summaries from old data, but they do not mean much at all. They will not get you admitted, regardless of how much one thinks they will. (Current) Knowledge is power.

The current rumor is that both FSU and UF will be allowed to push up tuition to a much greater level that is more in line with national public university averages.

The current tuition is practically a fire sale. It will not last.

Of course the rankings are flawed, but to some extent they do gauge the quality of education compared to other schools. And no, nobody should ever pick a school based on its ranking. I turned down quite a few schools that were ranked higher than UMiami because I knew that it was the best school for me.

^This is important. ;)

I doubt UF and FSU will increase their tuition as much as you say. The majority of the students going to those schools have Bright Futures, and higher tuitions will increase the amount of money the State is going to be spending :O

"To be honest, I'd say UWF is the worst in FL, then UCF is like the next one after that. "

seriously...ucf 2nd worse school in fl? are you serious?

UCF and USF are among the fastest growing state schools in Florida. They are far from the worst. I would not be surprised to see either USF or UCF begin competing with FSU for prestige in the future. Right now though, FSU is much better than UCF and USF, but at the rate that these schools are improving, who knows....

As to the worst schools in Florida I would have to say:

FIU (Miami, Fl)

Florida Gulf Coast (Ft. Myers)

UNF (Jax)

UWF (Pensacola)

Barry University (Miami)

ST. Thomas (Miami)

Jacksonville University (Jax)

UCF is growing, but it doesn't mean that the student body is getting better. The more they accept, the less selectivity they will become. For my school at least, it was a school who everyone applied as a safe choice just because they know they ARE gonna get in no matter what.
Really, I'm not trying to offend anyone that goes to UCF, because I know there are smart people going there; however, the average student that goes to UCF is terrible . UCF opened the new Med School and that would attract a lot of people, but it doesn't mean that it's getting up there with schools like UF yet. UCF still has a long way to go.

not sure about other schools listed above, but as for Jacksonville University (Jax) . I found it quite funny that I knew a person that got to Columbia for his grad school.

ummm, no.

as applications increase, the number of accepted students can increase while the rejection rate also increases.

thats why it gets harder and harder to get into every year (UCF)...more people are applying, because its starting to grow (not in the sense of student body) though it is the sixth biggest school in the country

UCF then USF will be competeing with FSU soon (no homer)

i actually got into both and chose ucf

UNF is a decent school. I personally know three kids who attend there and love it. That said, they were all three rejected from UCF (and of course FSU).
In our area, the kids who don't get into UF or FSU go to UCF then USF (in that order). If they don't get into UCF or USF, the next choice down the food chain is UNF and FGCU. Last on the preference list is UWF. Some kids do choose FAU (which is about the same competitiveness to get in as say...UNF and FGCU) because they are not ready or financial able to leave home.

Unless UCF and USF follow the trend of raising admission standards, they won't be competing with FSU. Have a look at their admissions page and compare them with the numbers being thrown around here. UCF and USF won't be on the same admission standards as FSU, UF, and UM.
