How can you prove UM has better academics? And if it really does, why isn't it ranked higher?

Did you overlook the most recent SAT averages?

FSU: 1265 (committed students)
Miami: 1275 (not specified)

The research dollars are attributable to Miami's mature medical school, while FSU med is less than a decade old. Research dollars probably have less to do with undergrads than ranking of graduate programs. Likewise endowment dollars, also associated with mature med schools.

All the UM students in this thread shouldn't feel insecure about their university. UM it's a fine school that offers a solid undergraduate education. If UM students feel like paying $30,000 a year, then more power to them. Even if you can get a comparable education at a state university for a fraction of the cost.

I will add that one of my employees seriously regrets not attending FIU instead of UM. The poor guy currently has an astronomical college debt to deal with. He now figures that a degree from FIU would've given him similar opportunities in the job market. Honestly, I would've hired the guy regardless of what school he graduated from. Just something for you kids to think about.

BTW, those College Board stats are outdated.

Yeah, they are outdated.. the average GPA for an incoming freshman at UM is a 4.2

Conservatives are theocrats trying to drag America back an 11th century theocratic hellhole.

People could argue about this for an eternity. Other than the obviously biased people, everyone knows that the order is:

UM,UF
FSU
UCF,USF
FAU

That's for overall academics. Obviously some schools are ranked higher in certain departments, but I'm not going to get into that. Anyone can excel at any school, so definitely consider other factors (size, location, cost) before you decide on anything.

^Written like a Miami student...but I don't blame you. At the tuition rates they charge I'd feel the same way. ;)

Speaking of UNF, our school informs us about events in hotel conference rooms where they make you sit for an information session, then they look at your transcript and accept or reject you on the spot.

Written like a FSU parent/alum ... in denial their school in inferior, but I don't blame you ;)

By the way UM meets 90% financial aid.

Oh, and I have never, ever heard of someone not getting aid from UMiami. In fact, stats say that about 80% receive need based aid, while 13% are getting merit based (I'm guessing it's more, since I haven't met anyone who didn't get a scholarship there). Just saying, most students at Miami aren't paying full tuition.

Can we stop arguing about rankings and which school is better than which? They each have their pluses and minuses. I believe that one should choose a college based upon where they fit in the best. I rather be happy and enjoy my college experience rather than hate the school where I attend which I chose just because it was ranked higher.

I know people who I graduated with who chose to attend FSU over UF or UM, UF over FSU or UM, and UM over FSU and UF. I know people who refused to attend FSU based on what they heard about STDs (talk about ridiculous). I know people who refused to attend UF because they didn't like the city. I know people who refused to go to UM because it was too close to home. I could go on and on but ultimately one should base it upon where they fit in the best.

AMX, I'll agree with you there. The most important aspect of choosing a school is where you fit in.

What is that supposed to mean, parent2noles? Like many have said above me, most people at Miami are on need-based or merit scholarships. In fact, I only know one person who isn't, and that's because she was barely even admitted (deferred, accepted for Spring term and deferred for Fall, eventually accepted for Fall) and doesn't qualify for need-based financial aid. Honestly, you should really drop the "Miami is too expensive" attitude, because it's not making your beloved FSU any better.

Like FSUmba wrote:

He works in the Miami area.

"FSU: 1265 (committed students)"

Source for this is????? That would be a 65 point jump in 1 year. WOW, FSU leapfroged UF in SAT score?

I bet both schools leapfrom Miami in the next few years but not because of better academics. It will be because they are cutting Freshmen class size.

About FSU's Students
The middle 50% of the Fall 2008 accepted freshman class is: 3.7-4.2 GPA; 1190-1330 SAT (Critical Reading plus Math); 26-29 ACT.

University of Florida - Admissions
Middle 50% of the Class

* High School GPA of 4.0 - 4.4
* SAT of 1210 - 1400
* ACT of 26 - 31

Fast Facts | University of Miami
Average weighted GPA: 4.2
Admitted student mid-range SAT scores:
• 25th percentile: 1240
• 75th percentile: 1380

Hmmm, not too much variance between the three schools. SAT scores differ only by 30 to 50 points. That can be attributed to missing only a few questions. I can see UF and FSU statistics going up after the next admission cycle.

If we were to compare the numbers in terms of selectivity, UM >UF>FSU.

Does anyone have an opinion about Rollins? I'd really like to hear what you all think. I've heard people saying it's a really great school, and others asking "where's that?" I guess we don't have a big reputation since a lot of our students are out-of-staters.

Ive heard mixed opinions as well. Nobody from my high school went there though. anyways from what I know its got a solid business program, small classes, all in all pretty good academics. If I would have to compare I would say its better than University of Tampa and about the same as Stetson. Gorgeous campus in a really nice upscale part of Orlando.

as to the bad things:
Friends with this girl in college who just transferred last semester from Rollins. Said the drug scene was huge, lots of potheads.

Uncle went there, ended up transferring elsewhere too (this was about 15 years ago though :P) Thats all I have heard.

toms - Here's a page with the references to the new FSU SAT average, as well as Miami's average SAT:

In my experiece with Rollins, the rich, not so bright kids who don't want to go out of state go there for business. It's a very small, preppy school.
