Schools in Virginia that offer Merit Based Aid

Hello:

Which schools in Virginia offer merit-based financial aid? Currently a Junior starting the college search process.

Thanks

University of Richmond does. So does VCU. Any particular schools you are interested in?

Are you in state or out of state? What are your stats?

Thanks for the replies.

I am interested in George Mason in particular. Also I am in-state. Have a sibling there.

Stats:

2 AP courses Soph year
4 AP courses Junior year

4.33 GPA so far, haven’t taken SAT yet.

Well, take the SAT and ACT soon and let us know the results.

Also, are you taking the PSAT this month? If so, hopefully you will do well on that

Will do. What’s the best way to find scholarships ?

I took a practice one and got a 186. I know some problems I could’ve got but couldn’t remember the formula.

Old Dominion offers scholarships. So does VCU. So does George Mason. Even UVA does. But without knowing your SAT or Act score, it is impossible to even punt in terms of giving you good advice!

Look at GMU’s web site. If you apply early action by Nov 1 you are automatically considered for merit aid:

University Scholars gives four years free tuition:

Good luck!

For JMU you have Dingledine scholarship (but this is marketed at incoming freshmen though it is renewable. UVA also has the Jefferson scholars program. These are both merit based aid.

Thanks for the posts.

I took a condensed version of ACT/SAT Combo and got a 27 ACT 1760 SAT. I took the full length SAT practice test and got a 1950. Hope this helps

Your SAT scores will meet to be higher to be competitive for some of the scholarships.

What about Christopher Newport…don’t they give merit awards?

Most schools give merit awards to some degree. The question is…where will you be a competitive applicant for them.

I will say…Jefferson Scholars…highly competitive. I would not count on that.

VA Tech offers several limited merit scholarships, as well as the Presidential Scholarship Initiative for “in-state Virginia high school students with significant financial need”, and very competitive recruitment scholarship consideration for those accepted into Honors.

Thanks. I do plan on studying quite more for the tests.

Look at some of the private schools. They could end up being a lot cheaper than instate VA. VTAG is $3100. Schools like Ferrum would most likely offer significant merit $$ even with a 27. Go to Roanoke and Lynchburg’s NPC and put in your stats and see what they offer. It is unlikely you will get merit aid from the publics unless your scores skyrocket beyond what you are currently posting.

Hello:

I just took the real SAT last week. Hoping for some good scores next week. I am leaning heavily towards public uni’s especially due to close proximity to home and family there.

I got a 1890. Any chances or need to increase?

Thanks
