Schools like CMU, RPI

D is applying to reach schools: U Chicago, Johns Hopkins and Rice
Targets: CMU and RPI
Safety: Northeastern

I would like her to have more targets. She wants to major in Comp Sci, but is looking for school that offer linguistics minors, or game design.

Her grades are OK, not great 3.66, good AP scores (4s) and very good SATs
No sports or music, but some geeky extracurriculars, including Captain of Debate and Drama.

Live in northeast, prefer not to travel too far, but of course it would be worth it for Rice or Chicago.

(Is CMU really a match?)

Worchester Polytechnic and U of Rochester are worth a look.

it seems a lot of kids who apply to CMU, also apply to U of Rochester and Case Western. so you may want to check out U of R & Case Western too!!

I think U of R has a good linguistics program

U of R = good linguistics

RIT = good games design

Cornell might be a good reach, excellent engineering and linguistics.

Lehigh might be worth checking out…from an admissions standpoint, probably a low match/high safety perhaps.

Here’s a blurb from their cognitive science program, which might fit your D’s interests:

here’s what Lehigh’s Computer Science dept has to say about their specialty areas…

http://cas.lehigh.edu/casweb/Content/default.aspx?pageid=102

Seems like lots of schools are doing game development these days. Problem might be finding that linguistics minor at a school that is top notch for Comp Sci. (Not to mention, will she have time to do a minor???)

Here is info on WPI’s program:
http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Majors/IMGD/

Couple more…although these schools are perhaps not as technically deep as those you have mentioned above (and they are smaller LACs, but both have engineering programs) you may want to check out CS programs at Bucknell & Lafayette, both in Pa. I don’t think either has a linguistics minor, though.

bingo…yes, weenie, the combo of CS (although I really don’t know which CS programs are the best, nor which ones are strong in game development) AND linguistics minor is a challenge.

Boston U, CS dept reserach areas:

linguistic minor:

Doesn’t CMU have the best compsci program in the country? And also one of the hardest to get into?

If your daughter wants to major in comp sci, then CMU is probably the biggest reach of all the schools on her list (they have an extremely strong, and competetive, CS program).

Papa Chicken, I was under the impression that Lehigh was more selective than that - a match/safety school? Isn’t it as selective/more selective than some of the other colleges indicated?

just gauging relative to CMU (assuming the OP accurately judged CMU as a match)…based upon my experience w/ S (and many of his friends) last year, Lehigh is respected, yes, but less selective than the likes of CMU, particularly CMU’s computer science program.

Just to echo what others have said, if she’s applying for CS, CMU/SCS would be more selective than Chicago, JHU and probably Rice.

How about Stevens Inst of Tech (across river from Manhattan) or Case (though don’t know about linguistics at either)

CS at CMU is much easier to get into as a female than a male, so you have that in your favor.
