Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of how humans think and how machines think: How can our understanding of the way humans think improve the performance of machines that are meant to behave intelligently? How can our understanding of the ways to make machines behave intelligently improve our understanding of the way humans think? The disciplines most commonly involved in cognitive science studies are psychology, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience and anthropology. The Cognitive Science program offers a major and minor in cognitive science.

<p>here’s what Lehigh’s Computer Science dept has to say about their specialty areas…

One specialty in the department is developing software systems that enable computers to achieve high performance, particularly operating systems, programming languages, databases, and algorithms for distributed and parallel computers.</p>

<p>Another focus is intelligent systems, including development of tutorial multimedia software for education. Intelligent systems include expert systems; user-friendly databases; natural language, in which the computer understands everyday English; computer vision, in which visual communication between computers and humans is enhanced; and neural networks and genetic algorithms, in which computers learn like people.</p>

<p>Our facilities allow development of interactive video and sound for multimedia applications, which are expected to grow dramatically as new PCs and fiber-optic networks are deployed.
