Schools like Rice...WashU...

Hello everyone. Like the tenth thread I have posted in this forum. But who cares, its fun for me and I hope its fun for the people that like to respond. I am redefining my list of schools I am intending to apply to and I'd like to have some input on a few things. Here are the ones I am considering:

Washington University (Reach)
Rice University (Reach)
University of Alabama-Huntsville (Safety)
Saint Louis University (Match-Safety)
Missouri University of Science & Technology (Safety)

As you can see I am missing some schools

I have about a 3.7 GPA, and I am anticipating 30-31 on ACT. I have taken 3 APs junior year, planning on taking 5 or 6 more senior year. My ECs are decent, and show interest in the sciences.

My intended major is Aerospace Engineering. It would be preferable if the school itself has a specific major and its own department in this, but it is okay if it is a "concentration" in the school's Mechanical Engineering department.

I have a few schools that would be good safeties for me. SLU is a safety because I have a relation there that will allow me to have 2/3rds of the tuition taken care of, and I think I'd have an almost certain chance of getting in. Not sure on the intricacies of this thing (if it comes before or after other aid awards), but regardless the price is taken care of. Not to mention, I would be commuting to the campus, unless there is required housing on campus freshman year or something.

We are not entirely too sure of what exact amount per year we are going to be able to spend, we'll likely figure that out sometime soon in the future then run the calculators on these schools to see if they would be affordable, then we can figure out what would be financially viable for us. I am not entirely too sure on how Wash U would affordable be for us. I will commute to the campus (I live in St. Louis area), unless of course it is required to live in campus freshman year or something. They also claim to meet 100% of need, and I have heard things from friends who know friends that were accepted to the school and received varieties of needs, with varieties of family incomes, them being generally pretty generous. But of course it cannot be completely considered until I figure out exactly how much I would get for attending.

I am looking for a university like Rice that is less selective. I like its small size, intellectual climate, beautiful campus, generally a nice place to live, and I have no preference in terms of location. I slightly prefer rural areas to urban or suburban ones. Additionally, a school where Greek life is not very prominent/nonexistent would be ideal. I hate partying, as well. I would like to find as much of this as I can in a school that fits my GPA and ACT more, since I doubt I'd be able to get into Rice. Generous financial aid is also a plus, since at this point and time I am not 100% sure on what I am going to be able to pay for.

Any suggestions are great, thank you for your time!

Not sure about aerospace, so you’ll have to look, but my guy who liked WUSTL loves U Rochester (and is currently a sophomore there).

WPI has an aerospace major.

You would have no problem getting into S&T. Lucky you with SLU. I would do a summer program at SLU and/or WASH U. That would give you a feel for their programs. S&T also has summer programs. Have you considered Georgia Tech and ruled it out?

Georgia Teach seems massive to me. Seems like I would get lost in all the mess, and from what I’ve heard sports are really big on campus and I don’t like them at all.

I’ve looked at U Rochester and WPI, but I’m not entirely too sure on them. What I’ve seen so far is good though.

I agree its massive. Just a very good program but pricey and large.

If you do some of the summer programs I mentioned I think there may be scholarship opportunities for those who attend. Also if you go to boys state this summer wash u has a scholarship opportunity.

Maybe, but I’m hoping on being accepted to some research internships across the country, (which are free outside of housing). The programs at SLU and WashU are fairly costly and the scholarships are only partial. I’d be able to just visit them regardless…

How does University of Rochester differ from Rochester Institute of Technology?

UGA is the sports school of Georgia. Football is of secondary importance to the good majority of GT students (though plenty regularly go to the games).

Would I have a good shot at getting into GT?

Also, given they are an OOS public school is there financial aid somewhat lackluster for oos students?
