Schools Like U Miami....

Hello all, I’m coming into my senior year and I’m trying to finish off my college list. So far its something like

UMiami (first choice)
USC
UCSB
UCLA
Penn State
ASU

My stats:
African American Male living in Jersey
4.1 W GPA, 3.7-3.8UW (not sure)
2150 SAT (going for 2200)
Just decent SATS, though I have been working since I was 14 anywhere from 15-25+ hours a week and help contribute to the costs of my house.

I’m looking for schools like UMiami which means:

Warm weather. I’m tired of NYC winters

Mid - Big student populations (10,000+)

Good social life (parties, things to do, etc)

Diversity and preferably not near me since I wanna meet new people.

Thanks in advance

what majors are you interested in?

All of those are great schools, but IMO, with a 2150 SAT, 3.8 GPA uw, plus the fact that you are African-American, you could even be aiming a bit higher.

Nice list though.

All those schools will admit you

well ucla might be a slight reach because you are out of state

Well I'm applying to basically the same schools, but some of my schools differ just a little bit, and maybe they are worth adding to your list.

Well another school is Indiana, which is really similar to Penn State. However, I think Indiana will provide a better college experience. And Bloomington seems to be an overall better city than State College.

And if you like ASU, you might want to check out SDSU, as another safety, or maybe a replacement for ASU. I personally really love SDSU, and it is one of my top choices.

Good Luck....Also you may want to check out LMU. It has a religious affiliation, but I didn't find it to be religious at all. I mean they give out birth control and allow alcohol on campus, and they claim to be a catholic school. It is a smaller than the others, but the location, campus, and students are amazing.

Vanderbilt, Duke, Tulane - all worth considering.

I think you'll get in to all of the listed schools except maybe UCSB and UCLA, because the UC's are incredibly tough out of state.

If you're willing to move beyond huge schools, Rollins might be a nice fit.

Rollins? See the recent thread started by Northeastern Mom regarding her African American son and Rollins.

the UCs are rather expensive for OOS....finaid means a lot of self-help. good luck.

"Rollins? See the recent thread started by Northeastern Mom regarding her African American son and Rollins."

Oh, I wasn't aware - had no idea that anyone has had trouble.

I suggested it because it's a school that a lot of kids from my school go to for warm weather, mediocre to above-average academics, and a solid party scene (which the OP wanted).

A LOT of cross-applications to UMiami.

Thanks for the responses, I'm thinking of maybe replacing ASU with U of A (ironically I got a letter from them yesterday), and possibly getting one or two reach schools just in case.

I'm interested in a psych major.

Anyone else got anymore suggestions?

how about UNC or UVA? warm, big time sports, fun environments, excellent academics

How about Southern Methodist University (Dallas) and Wake Forest? I agree with Beaston that you could aim higher.

Closest school to UMiami: Boston University, George Washington University, University of Florida and Florida State:

Most are similar or a lil easier to get into than Miami but most ppl that apply to Miami apply to those schools so i assume they are similar.
