DS is finding the mailings from U of C intriguing. As we can't afford U of C, and it would be a reach anyways, are there any other schools which have a similar combination of funky/offbeat/we're way out there approaches and academics?

My d thought Earlham had a similar vibe to U of C–however it is also quite pricey.

If you are paying full frieght, all private schools in UofC caliber will be cost about the same. Some of the LACs will cost less in tuition and fees, but the traveling cost to these remote locations will add up and it will essentially amount to a similar “total cost”.

In terms of prestige and the academic seriousness and talent of the students applying/accepted, Swarthmore is pretty similar (but smaller student body and in a suburban setting). Students work harder at Swat and Chicago than any of the (traditional) ivies, and are more apt to become academic leaders themselves. Cost is similar.

In my earlier years, I took some courses at William and Mary, I thought it is an UofC like. If you are lucky enough being in Va, you can get a bargan as in state tuition.

Swarthmore does have loan-free financial aid, although it is of a similar selectivity and if you don’t qualify for financial aid that part wouldn’t help.

Please apply to the UofC anyway! FA might surprise you.

^^ I agree with arkleseizure (!)

What are your son’s stats. Since you say that you can’t afford UChicago, then that’s going to be the case at many other privates unless the schools offer merit for stats.

Also, how much can you spend?
