lynn4eva,

It really depends. Admission at the top 25 or so schools is such a crap shoot that someone can get into one but not the other even if they have the same target admission market.

It really depends. Admission at the top 25 or so schools is such a crap shoot that someone can get into one but not the other even if they have the same target admission market.

Thereās such a big difference in result between being a CA resident applying to UCs and being an out-of-state applicant to schools like U Vaā¦if youāre looking for easier admissions, that is not the path.

For Fall 2007 Freshman:
Admit Rate:
Cal: 23.1%
UCLA: 23.3%

GPA:
Cal: 4.17
UCLA: 4.14

SAT Composite:
Cal: 2029
UCLA: 2008

Although your statement may be true, itās a lot closer than you thinkā¦Iād say those numbers are statistically equal.

Cal does have more prestige, though, since itās older, is the flagship campus, and has more distinguished programs.

hmm..
If a difference of .2% in acceptance rate is enough to differentiate between a top elite school and a good above-average school, what about difference of 12% in acceptance rate (stanford 11% vs cal 23%)?

And ultra, i think you are confused between Graduate level and Undergrad level. Sure Cal would be on par with Stanford if the matter at hand was comparing graduate programs, but at undergrad level, Cal is just way down there in terms of admission rate, SAT, GPA, and quality of education.

I say:
Undergrad: Stanford > Cal = UCLA
Grad: Stanford = Cal > UCLA

Sounds about right.

but how much would the lower admission rate affect YOU as a student? there are many more important things to compare such as the campus location (close or far from home), things to do while on campus(sporting events⦠who beat Cal last weekend???) and even dorm food should be placed before admission rates because good food= happier student= better life

Re: USNWR selectivity:

Cal is #14
4 universities are tied for #15 (Cornell, Emory, Notre Dame, and Tufts)
UCLA is #19, tied with 3 others (Northwestern, Georgetown, and USC).

Well, actually you can at least watch a football game at Cal while still on-campusā¦unlike UCLA. :P

ultra cali,

No, statistically that .2% is pretty meaningless when weāre talking averages. Especially in large groups where thereās so much variation to begin with.

And no offense, but Iāve actually done the job search and seen how my degree holds up against Berkeley grads. Itās not like Berkeleyās degree holds a mystical power that UCLA cannot match. People simply do not notice or care.

Population size does not affect acceptance rate. Stanfordās undergrad is far more selective than Calās.

Memorial stadium is on campus because it is smaller than rose bowl and the area around Cal is just too crappy to walk around⦠can we say āhollywoodā?

^ No, itās on campus because planners had the foresight to include a football stadium⦠Unlike Calās satellite schoolā¦Uā¦Gā¦Lā¦Y!

at least our campus isnāt cold and cloudy every day⦠plus Calās dorm food taste like crap comparing to us⦠another number 1 in the nation haha

I donāt personally think UCLA is all that ugly.

Besides, the point is that the admitted class to UCLA and Cal, as well as the matriculants, are largely the same. As for the logistics of how things were planned out (like the football stadium), it has little to do with the quality of the undergrads. Caltech has no football stadium, and Iām fairly certain that itās more selective than UCLA and Cal.

On a lighter note, my kids have both eaten at many colleges and they both agree that UCLA does indeed have the best food!

UCBChemEGrad,

US News selectivity ranking is so BS. Thereās no way Emory is more selective than Northwestern. NUās latest average SAT is 1423 for enrolled and 1463 for admitted students, significantly higher than Berkeley/USC.

ultra cali,

You tell people to be honest but to be honest, to me, the gap between Cal and UCLA is way smaller than the gap between Cal and Stanford as far as selectivity goes.

Sam Lee,

Thatās almost a full SD above Calās average, demonstrating that USNWR needs to work a bit on the little āmeasureā of theirs.

And by putting āmeasureā in quotes, Iām implying that itās a poor metric.

ultra cali
The smartest students wouldnāt pick UCLA over Cal? I know many people who did, and some who even chose UCSB over Cal. And yes, these are āeliteā students.

UCLAri, I didnāt mean to say UCLAās campus is ugly.

You know the UCLA fight song, where they goā¦Uā¦Cā¦Lā¦Aā¦fight, fight, fight? The alternate lyrics are Uā¦Gā¦Lā¦Y. I think an 'SC student made it up.

I was just being humerous.
Your Bruins beat my Bearsā¦Iām P.Oād with that cause we had a chance for a good season.

UCBChemEGrad,

Some people donāt take to the red brick look. I personally like it. Itās a helluva lot nicer than the concrete and steel look that a lot of the newer UCs go for. Bleh.
