Schools looking for tech whizzes?

Someone above mentioned Ft Lewis so I thought I’d give it a plug as a cost effective in state option. There is no denying the school’s liberal arts roots but, they now offer both an Entrepreneurship program and CIS majors you might find interesting - as well as the Computer Engineering mentioned above. Durango would be a great place to spend a few years.

Another thought - a friend of my younger son joined the Army a couple of years ago with a similar profile. He is studying technology and is focused on security and absolutely LOVES it. Much of the training he receives can be converted to college credit and he is working on real IT projects with demonstrable value. He estimates it will take less than 2 years to earn a BS in CS from ASU after he completes his active duty. Not for everyone.

Look at applied IT programs at community colleges and regional (directional) 4-years. Many are including industry certifications in their degree programs and can lead to high paying jobs quickly even with just a two year degree.

These are not paths to the traditional computer science degree which is more theory-based and doesn’t backward map from two-year IT degrees very well (except for the gen ed parts of them). To get promoted you need the 4-year – but your employer might pay for you to finish it tho, again, it may not be a traditional comp sci degree.

Of course, all this can mean forgoing the ‘traditional’ college experience, but students with the right 2-year IT degree can get $60k in places like DC. Things like cloud computing, cybersecurity… Adding project management certifications to the IT skills is another great path.

Is this what you’re thinking about?
