Hi, there! I'm brand new to CC. I'm a high school senior who's very interested in becoming a book editor and curious as to what schools (UCs in particular) will offer me the greatest opportunities/advantages in that field. Any input at all is awesome. Thanks!

The people I know who’ve gone into publishing have majored in English (although another writing-intensive humanities major would also work, I would think) and then have started at low-level jobs at a publishing company in NYC and worked their way up. It’s an overcrowded field so those entry-level jobs typically don’t pay very well. More established, experienced people can do quite well for themselves. The whole field is in flux now, as traditional magazine and book publishing are challenged by online alternatives.

Some companies offer summer internships. These can be a good way of finding out whether you’re suited for this career.

UCs with superb English Departments include Berkeley, UCLA, and Irvine.

^ I second the suggestion to pursue an English major.

UC Extension also offers certificate programs in editing and related areas:
