My daughter is a high school senior looking for a good program in Texas for vocal performance perhaps with a minor on music education. We are aware of the programs at Rice & North Texas. Can anyone recommend other schools with quality programs? Cost will be a consideration for us so we would be very interested in Texas state schools.

UT at austin has always had a great name and some great teachers. but rice should be your top pick. and they give a lot of scholarship money-if you get in. :) they accepted 2 this year :)

When my D auditioned at OCU in spring 2005, the accompanist was chatting with us outside the audition room and said that SFA has a great vocal music program. I had never heard that before, even though I attended SFA back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Back then I did not know any music majors, and I am certainly not musical. As it turns out, the accompanist has a good friend who is head of the music department at SFA, so I'm not sure exactly how objective his opinion was.

Also, at a college fair at my D's high school, I visited the SFA table. The recruiter there practically drooled when he heard my D's SAT/ACT scores (1320/28) and said that he was on the scholarship committee and could be pretty sure that between her grades and music ability (All-state Mixed Choir), she could get a full ride at SFA. Sounded great to me, but she had her heart set on OCU where she is currently a sophomore MT major.

I am just telling you what I heard. We did not check out SFA at all other than this. Also, others from our school auditioned at Baylor, Texas Tech and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

I do believe that the University of North Texas is well known for it’s music programs as well. In fact, I’ve heard that it is largely a music school. I want to see the campus myself, as I’m also considering a vocal performance major.

This thread is over six years old…why not start a new one? (seems like lots of UNT interest this week!! )
