Hi, I'm currently a high school sophomore and am working out which schools I want to consider applying to. The two most important factors for me are: good internship/job opportunities and location (prefer the Northeast, prefer big city but could probably settle for one or the other... oh, and of course safety of the area is important).

So far, I've got NYU, DePaul, Carnegie Mellon, Purchase, Temple, and Boston University. Are there any other good ones I'm missing? Thank you!

Webster University has wig and costume design!

Ithaca, Syracuse, UArts

nomester7: Are you a student in the Wig and Make-up Design program at Webster? Would love to know more about it since my D is interested in that program. Thanks!!

UNCSA offers a program in Costume Design and Technology where all students participate in the same curriculum for the first two years and then decide which track to be on (design or technology) for the last two. They also have a program in Wig and Makeup Design.

D '15 and I have been looking into this major as well. We have U. of Cincinnati and Shenandoah on our short list along with some on yours. I realize they may not fit all of your criteria, but I thought I’d put them out there for anyone else checking out this thread.

Like W2BeHome, I’m going to add this suggestion for anyone looking at this thread although it doesn’t fit your geographic location. My D is taking costume design with an emphasis in costuming at St. Edward’s University in Austin, and I couldn’t be more delighted with the way the faculty and staff is so completely invested in her success.

I’m also thrilled to death (and so is she) because she started out wanting to do musical theater and decided to go with the more practical choice of design - but they have added an MT minor option and at her adviser’s meeting a couple weeks ago, she got not only permission but a blessing to get it because, her adviser said, costume for MT is different and this will be a big help for her. As well as getting to fulfill both of her passions. :)

@momarmarino, No, I am not. I’m a senior in high school right now, but we did visit Webster in August. I fell in love! Everything seems perfect there. I can tell they are very theatre focused all around because about half of their majors are in the theatre arts. Including wig and costume design. I’d definitely give them a visit! Their faculty consists of those with very much experience in the field.

Hi Mfarrell,
check out Albright college in Reading Pa. My D is a freshman double major in theatre and costume design. It is a very small school(1700) and the head of the costuming major is a phenomenal influence. Its a very lovely, warm arts environment.small town campus about an hour west of Philadelphia. let me know if you need any other info.Good luck with your planning. You are SO smart to start your research now.

Thanks nomester7! Have you visited University of North Carolina as well? I think every school can make themselves sound great on their website but it’s nice to get a first-person perspective. We live on the west coast and will not do visits prior to my D actually applying and hopefully getting an interview so this forum is a great way for us to learn about each school.

momarmarino, I did not visit North Carolina. We live in Wisconsin, and Webster was the farthest we’ve traveled so far.

Thank you for all the excellent answers! I will definitely add all these schools to the “maybe” list and possibly move a few up to “yes” after I’ve checked them out more thoroughly :)
