Sparkye,

Ohio State is nowhere near the caliber of school as Illinois. Which major can you honestly say that Ohio State is a better choice than Illinois?

CS? Nope. Engineering? Hell no! Psychology? Uh, nope. Accounting? LOL!

Plenty, Bill73… Since you are new here, I will let you do the research on your own. I am kind of busy now. Oh, & Btw, it should also be in pleural, the admission scandal(s).

Plenty?

Actuarial Science? Nope. Physics? Nope. Chemistry? Nope. Civil Engineering? Nope.

So, what are all these programs that Ohio State is ranked ahead of Illinois in? Football 101?

Michigan is a better school than Illinois. I will admit that. But definitely not OSU.

^^ I can play that game, too! :p

Economy? Nope. Education? Nope. Political Sci.? Nope. Sociology? Nope.

I agree that traditionally Illinois has always been strong in Engineering, and many of the hard sciences as I had also defended Illinois academics here in the past against the Wolverines. I am all for constructive talk as an alumnus of two Big Ten schools; however, I have no problem continue with the smack talk stemmed from your attack of tOSU’s football player, either. Currently, UIUC’s Business School is tied with Ohio State’s Fisher at #14.

The fact remains that Illinois has been in decline in terms of academic reputation, and school as a whole the last few years, while tOSU has been the exact opposite as reflected in the eyes of academics and on USNWR. In fact, many of the local Illinois high schools students these days opt for Ohio State instead (we have been offering variety of scholarships to OOS students, so our tuition and fees actually end-up cheaper than in-state UIUC in many instances), while avoid dealing with all the current administrative fiasco.

Geographic diversity (Columbus campus, autumn 2011)
Ohio State enrolls students from every state and territory. States with the highest enrollment:

500+: Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, California, Michigan
300 – 499: Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia
100 – 299: Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Utah, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Tennessee, Connecticut
50 – 99: West Virginia, Washington, Colorado, South Carolina, Kansas

Last but not least, my apologies, but I am entitled to my own opinion!! Academically, Ohio State over Illinois is inevitable in the next few years due to budget differences. In fact, I expect tOSU to be equal to the level of Wisconsin by 2020 and on par with Michigan by 2025 at the undergraduate level based on its aggressive Master Strategic Planning. :)

Michigan has over 8 billion dollars in it’s endowment and is planning another campaign in the near future. Good luck ever catching up with Michigan Sparkeye You just assume other schools are standing by and doing nothing in terms of growing their excellence compared to tOSU. You keep saying that Ohio State is on the rise, and they very well could be. Michigan has been near the top in academics for over a hundred years and believe me, alumni will NEVER allow some school in the middle of Ohio to overtake it. lol :-)

I can assure you a huge percentage of those OOS students attending tOSU are/were given generous reductions in tuition as compared to the top state schools, like Michigan, where most OOS students are FULL PAY.

^^ Thanks for the update, rjk!!

Plain and Simple: When I made my projection regarding to Ohio State’s ascension into top academic echelon of American higher education based on countless sources, I’ve already taken into consideration of all other peer institutions’ strategic plans and budgets (including Michigan) for the next 10 years or so.

Also, our current $2.5-billion fundraising will end in 2016 (nearly $2-billion raised thus far), with another official $5-billion dollars campaign set to kick-start in 2020 (tOSU’s Sesquicentennial Celebration). Even if President Gee were to step down by 2020, everything had already been planned accordingly based on my research over the years. So, let’s just wait and see, shall we? :)

No, I think Michigan should just go hire Gee and his team now, in order to put together an aggressive strategic plan in overtaking UCLA & UVA by 2020 and perhaps UCB by 2025 based on US News ranking. :p

Indeed, and I continue to look forward to hope that Michigan would spend it on the students via merit scholarships or tuition freeze, instead of perpetually safeguarding the endowment for either President’s own legacy or school’s own sake. Sparkeye’s “5-5 Rule” applies to any institution: Over $5-Billion endowment coupled with Over 5% annual tuition hike = disastrous recipe for any prospective student, period!!

$680 Million Project

The facility, now scheduled for completion in 2021, is expected to increase the number of isotopes with known properties from about 2,000 to more than 5,000 and, in doing so, to help scientists answer basic questions about the structure of matter, the origin of the elements in the cosmos, how stars evolve and how they die.

It also is expected to add $1 billion to the state’s economy over the first decade, adding 5,000 temporary construction jobs and ultimately employing about 400 scientists, engineers and other staff.

Go State!! :)

Schools on the rise-USC, UChicago, Davidson, Holy Cross.

hands town the two gems shining more and more every day are muhlenberg college and hendrix college.

getting a third place that is coming up quickly is butler university!

^^Agree with zobroward. USNWR has ranked Hendrix the #1 up-and-coming LAC for the past three years. I also hear a lot of good things about Muhlenberg, and have seen some very bright, accomplished students from our town choose Butler.

Other LACs I think deserve more attention than they get are St. Olaf and Gustavus Adolphus (both in MN), Earlham in IN, and Cornell College in IA. Ursinus in PA also seems like a school on the rise.

Ursinus ^^^ I agree 100% , it slipped my mind!
st olaf is awesome, but a MN winter is no joke! that is the only reason I would not consider st olaf! I ask people from MN or who live their and winter compared to PA or even MA is crazy!

Trinity College (CT)
Ohio Wesleyan
UConn

Trinity… definitely not. Considering where it is I don’t think it’s going to get much better anytime soon.
Ohio Wesleyan… never heard of it.
Uconn I can see possibly rising. It’s ranked #58 now, I can see it being top 50 eventually.

I think USC is one of the schools on the rise, and might eventually become Duke-like status

They have the resources, location, athletics, increasing academic reputation, the campus revamp plan, and the right president in place.

The schools needs to continue to grow and have academic focus so that it can build a better reputation as an academic and research powerhouse.

New Common App member overshadows the others

The Ohio State University
July 4, 2012
By: Craig Meister

As rising high school seniors set out to start completing their college applications later this summer, those hoping to get away with only using the Common Application will have one major new college to consider.

The Ohio State University, a major research university that has up until this coming admissions season only maintained its own institutional application, will start accepting the Common App for applicants to its main, Columbus campus.

The 2012-2013 Common Application will be available online August 1, 2012, and students applying to Ohio State will have to complete both the Common Application and the Ohio State supplemental form. Yet, this is not the only change to Ohio State’s admissions procedures.

The university’s December 1 priority deadline has been eliminated; however, the university still encourages students to apply early in the fall and by the final application deadline of February 1, 2013.

Meanwhile, information collected on the Common Application and Ohio State supplement will inform not only the admissions process, but also Honors & Scholars and Morrill Scholars processes, eliminating the need for separate applications.

Additionally, Ohio State will require students to submit one teacher recommendation with each application.

Ohio residents who want to apply directly to a Regional campus and domestic and international transfer students will continue to apply via the application Ohio State has used for many years.

Starting next Wednesday (Aug 1st), Ohio State will elevate its admission standard and becomes the 3rd most selective school in the B1G, behind only Northwestern and Michigan. Go Bucks!! :)

^ that’s great news for OSU. Any guesses as to how the changes will affect the # applications or the overall selectivity in the upcoming year?

@phantasmagoric,

*Minimum Impact: 50% ACT 27-31 with 20% app increase, and 53% Acceptance
*Maximum Impact: 50% ACT 28-32 with 30% app increase, and 48% Acceptance
