Schools similar to BC?

BC is a great school and I’m definitely going to apply there, but the only problem is its very close to my home. I’m interested in going to school a little further away than BC, so I was wondering what some similar school might be?

thanks!

villanova, sometimes known as the BC of pennsylvania
holy cross in worcester
fordham in New York
wake forest in north carolina
university of virginia
georgetown
duke
notre dame (they have nothing on BC)

ivy league schools also have a lot of cross applications with BC, but these are the schools that are similar to BC academically, socially, and visually

Holy Cross

I second everything eemmzz10 said, plus (for more of a safety) Providence College.

Georgetown, Fordham, and Holy Cross are all Jesuit-run colleges just like BC so they are the most similar.

Also take a look at Loyola University in Maryland…

Whenever the question is asked on this board, BC students are likely to respond that the Catholic atmosphere on campus is not so pervasive that a non-Catholic would feel out of place. But in naming schools similar to BC, 5 out of the 6 responses so far have limited their suggestions to Jesuit schools. Is the Jesuit influence so strong that it’s the central element of BC’s campus vibe?

its not that Catholicism is the central aspect of life at bc, but it is natural for a catholic school to be similar to other catholic schools. just by the way they are composed, the students they attract, and the faculty they hire. not all students that learn at catholic schools are catholic or even practice religion, but they know they can get a good education at a school that happens to be catholic.

and for the record, uva and duke are not catholic schools

The Jesuit influence is very strong at BC, but that does not mean a pervasively Catholic – or even “religious” – atmosphere on the campus:

The Jesuits emphasize “educating the whole person” so a core curriculum is used to provide a broad liberal arts education for every student.

The Jesuits teach students to look at the world critically and to try to make it better, hence the high proportion of BC students involved in various community service projects (reflecting another Jesuits motto, “men and women for others.”)

The most similar is Villanova. Villanova is run by another order of priests but I would say it is the most similar school to BC.

If it is Jesuit schools you are interested in, St. Joseph’s is about half the size of BC but has division 1 sports, is Jesuit and is in Philadelphia. Also look at these other Jesuit schools if you prefer Jesuit-run schools: Scranton, Loyola (MD), Georgetown, Fordham, Fairfield. Holy Cross is also Jesuit but is probably also too close to home.

I dont believe Scranton is run by the Jesuits anymore.

Yes it is.

Scranton is Jesuit. Here’s a list of all the Jesuit colleges.
