Schools similar to Cornell University

The end of my junior year is almost here, and its that time when I begin to finalize my college list, even though I STILL WANT CORNELL< AND NOTHING MORE! But still, I need a list, and my final 20 needs to be cut.

I am going to apply Early Decision Cornell University this Fall by the way.

One way which I realized would make it easier is to list all my schools in order of how close they resemble Cornell in academics, social life, atmosphere, size, overall educational experience, etc.

So here is my list: Please rate these from the most similar to the least similar to Cornell.

-NYU
-Boston Univ
-Univ of Rochester
-Brown
-Brandeis
-Tufts
-Johns Hopkins University
-Georgetown
-Union College
-Colgate
-Vassar
-Lehigh
-Syracuse University
-George Washington
-University of Pittsburgh
-SUNY Bing
-SUNY Buffalo
-SUNY Geneseo
-SUNY Stony Brook

NOTE: Within the next month or so, I will begin to eliminate more of these. Those that are under intense scrutiny and doubt are Georgetown, George Washington, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Geneseo, U Pittsburgh, Colgate, and Syracuse Univ.

This may sound odd, but I suggest Bard and the honors college at Indiana University.

LOL...yes, quite odd...no way....sorry, no Indiana University...and Bard..ehh...no....again, look at that list and get an idea of how those schools are similar. They do have many things in common.

I'm actually quite serious, though less so about Bard. Except for the eliteness and location, Indiana has much in common with Cornell: it has a similar campus, and like Cornell has disparate strengths but especially in business, arts, and literature.

Sorry, im from NYC...im not going to Indiana...lol

uhm i would eliminate nyu...
big city, no campus, different atmosphere completely.
academically syracuse is not as good as Cornell but the atmosphere seems similar so maybe you would like it there....as well as temperature etc.

LOL...i live in NYC...it is a big city, indeed. academically, syracuse is not on par with Cornell, yes, but I need like 2 safeties.

Maybe Indiana would broaden your narrow outlook.

Its not narrow. I just want to stay within commuting distance of NYC...not have to go by plane to get home. Indiana is out of the question, thats it! Drop Indiana! Just look at that list right there...you're not helping me!

GW is probably least similar to Cornell.

Furthermore, you are trying to be narrow: you're trying to go to a school that's like Cornell if not Cornell itself, which is in driving distance of NYC.
Narrowness is not always bad.

if you want similar to cornell you should checkout uva. its almost identical.

A number of factors have to be considered, (i.e. your intended major or area of study) but here is my $0.02. Note: I don't know the SUNY's much.

SIMILAR ACADEMICALLY
NYU
Brown
Brandeis
Johns Hopkins
Tufts (slight drop)
Boston U. (slight drop)
Georgetown
Vassar

SIMILAR CLIMATE
All are very cold except:
the 2 DC schools
Hopkins
and slightly warmer:
Lehigh and Vassar

SIMILAR REMOTENESS
Rochester
Colgate
Syracuse
All SUNY's
Union (I hate Schenectady, but like Union)
Lehigh (closer to NYC)

DIFFERENCE- BIG CITY SCHOOLS
Pittsburgh
NYU
BU
Tufts
Brandeis
Vassar
Hopkins
GWU
G-Town
Brown (If you consider Providence a big city)
Syracuse (If you consider it a big city)
Union (If you consider Albany a big city)

SIMILAR - SIZE
BU
GW
Syracuse & G-Town (A bit Smaller)
Pitt (A bit Larger)
All the others are significantly smaller.

There are many other catagories to look at including Political views, Frat involvement, etc.
You probably know all of the above already. Depending on your preferences of the above similarities and differences you have to make your own determination. The bottom line is that none of these schools is SIMILAR to Cornell. Cornell is a great school in a beautiful location, away from the big cities, but not to far to get home to NYC in a few hour drive.

Yes, I need to do this frivolous college list process even though i will do ED Cornell, and I dont want anything but Cornell, and I will be extremely devastated if I dont get in.

Anyways, here is my new 15-school list!!!

-Cornell (Early Decision)
-NYU
-University of Rochester
-Johns Hopkins
-Brown
-Tufts
-Boston U
-Lehigh
-Brandeis
-Vassar
-Colgate
-Union
-Syracuse
-SUNY Bing
-SUNY Stony Brook

There it is. That wont be edited for at least another 2-3 weeks.
Sometime in the beginning to the middle of June, I will try to narrow this down to 10. I already do have schools in mind to further eliminate, but for now, 15 is fine. After June 15th or so, I will be going to a well-deserved vacation to Sunny Florida. I will only be back end of June/early July so that will be the time when I will start working on my Cornell essay and making my college list final.

And yes, i already know about the rural aspects, city aspects, politics, frat life, etc of all those schools. I am gradually cleaning up the dirt from my list....just give it some time.

But please, any suggestions/comments are definately welcome and helpful and they will definately help me in cutting down this 15-school list to 10.

I don't want to be mean here but Barron's is right about Indiana being the quite the same as Cornell. You need to look at the rank in one program(your major), not the school as a hole. Indiana has so many top 10 majors you would be surprised. Simply put Indiana is underrated. Realize that at the undergrad level, Indiana is top notch. In fact, I was looking at Cornell, but turned it down because I felt it was too focused on the graduate level and not enough on the grad level. Here's how I compare Indiana to the other schools you listed as far as academics.

-NYU
-Boston Univ
-Univ of Rochester---- Indiana wins
-Brown
-Brandeis
-Tufts
-Johns Hopkins University
-Georgetown
-Union College
-Colgate
-Vassar
-Lehigh
-Syracuse University------ Indiana wins
-George Washington-----Indiana wins
-University of Pittsburgh-------Indiana wins
-SUNY Bing-------Indiana wins
-SUNY Buffalo-------Indiana wins
-SUNY Geneseo-----Indiana wins
-SUNY Stony Brook-----Indiana wins

Once and for all....I AM NOT GOING TO INDIANA!!!! Lets use an analogy...a NYC kid cannot go to conservative Wyoming, just like he cant go to Indiana. ITS NOT HAPPENING>>> FORGET IT!!!

That's absurd. Bloomington, Indiana is a MUCH more cosmopolitan and culturally rich-- as well as hip and liberal-- place than Schenectady or really almost any other college town. And if I, who live in rural TN and was born in Indiana, can go to BU, (which is 15 times larger than the entire population of my hometown), why can't you go to Bloomington?
I really don't care where you go to college, but your regional prejudice is really bothering me.

LOL...this is just hilarious. I dont exhibit any "regional prejudice." Now thats absurd. I already said MY PARENTS AND I DECIDED THAT I WANT TO STAY IN COMMUTING DISTANCE OF NYC!!!!! I dont understand why you keep pushing Indiana. I dont want to go there, thats it!!! You're not helping me at all by constantly pushing the same thing and then disrespecting me by calling me absurd or prejudice. If I dont want to go to Indiana, and I already decided that looooong ago, I do not want to go there. Is that so difficult to fathom in one's brain?

SO DROP INDIANA. I SAID SIMILAR SCHOOLS TO CORNELL BASED ON MY LIST! MY COLLEGE LIST AT THE TOP! THAT IS THE LIST I AM USING, NOTHING ELSE!

I am not going somewhere where I need a plane ticket to get home. NO WAY. That is enough with Indiana, now ur getting me p i s s e d off! STOP WITH INDIANA!!!

Hey chill out. You're the one that propagated the problem anyway, by making the wyoming analogy. We get that you want a car drive away, so ignore whoever mentions indiana now.
