Schools similar to my top choice?

I am applying to Rice and I don't want to be blinded by the dream--I am trying to find safety/match schools. Does anyone have any suggestions for me, of schools very similar to Rice? Possibly useful information: I have solid ACT scores and am in the top 4% of my graduating class. I attend public school in southern CA and I'm VERY INTERESTED in attending an out of state school. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

WUSTL and Duke come to my mind when I think of Rice.

What aspects of Rice are you trying to replicate? Large city? Sports? Small student body? The south?

“What aspects of Rice are you trying to replicate? Large city? Sports? Small student body? The south?”

To be concise: Small student body, large city, no greek system, excellent academics/honor code, and research opportunities.

Thanks for your reply! I am considering applying to Washington University in St. Louis, but it would not fall under the safety category–I want to find good/similar schools with higher admission rates to be safe. Would you be willing to recommend any other possibilities?

How about Reed College in Portland Oregon?

How about Fordham? It fits “small student body, large city, no greek system, excellent academics/honor code, and research opportunities.” Great internships, too.

Case Western. Carnegie Mellon fits also, but is of a similar selectivity to Rice.

I second Case Western.

Check out Macelester, an urban LAC in Minneapolis.

I’m also trying to search primarily in the south/southwest/midwest region of the U.S., as my parents have expressed that paying for my flights to and from the Northeast would be too much for them to afford–and the weather doesn’t appeal to me. I’d also prefer to attend school outside of the Pacific Northwest–though the area is gorgeous, it’s not my cup of tea.

Boston… BC, Northeastern, Babson, Tufts
New Jearsey… Stevens
Utah… BYU
DC…GWU
Chicago…Loyola
LA… Tulane

^^^ It costs us more to fly to Chicago than to JFK from SF. Jetblue and Virgin America are cheap.

What do you want in a college?

What do you like about Rice?

How much will your parents spend each year?

What exactly are your stats?

Case has fraternities but Greek life there is not at all like Greek life at Ohio State, which is not much like Greek Life at U Alabama; it is not far from fitting the “no Greek” criteria. Case certainly has good research opportunities. Cleveland is a “medium-large” city. :)

Loyola in Chicago is an interesting idea. Chicago is a really fun college town.

I think it would be worthwhile for the OP to scan the list of Jesuit schools, since they have no Greek systems and strong honor codes. They have different academic strengths and we don’t know the OP’s ideas for possible majors.
[A J C U Member Institutions](http://www.ajcunet.edu/Member-Institutions)

I think the most useful piece of advice I’d give you is this:Come up with a list of not more than ten high profile institutions that closely compare with rice(only those that closely compare with rice and are big time achievers),then eliminate them one by one ,patiently, focusing on all factors of comparison that you are able to bring to the table including the very trivial ones. When you are through with the elimination process and you are still left with Rice, then you will be able to totally convince yourself that your choice is well balanced and sapient.Good luck, academician.

When I think of Rice, I think of the residential college system. Some other schools offering that are U of Penn, U of Miami, and Murray State along with two UCs - UCSD and UCSC. I know none of these meet your desired geographic locations.

Collegiateway.org may help you, if the residential college system is a major reason for liking Rice.

Holy Cross and Bucknell both schools have good academics and Div1 sports.

The northeast and the midwest have very similar weather. Each has places where rain is more common than snow, and vice versa.

What is a “solid” ACT in your mind? For some people, that’s a 28. For others, it’s a 33+. Big difference.

Do you think Rice is a match for you, or a reach?

“South” and “no greek system” is a tall order. :)

In the southwest, how about the honors college at UA or ASU? That gives you a small community feeling within the larger campus. If you are a serious contender for Rice, either of these schools should be safeties. Same with Tulane.

Check prices on flights to Minneapolis, because I would echo the Macalester recommendation. Same for Cleveland (Case). These are all cities served by Southwest, so that’s a good baseline for price shopping if you use Houston as a baseline.
