Schools that allow you to consider acting major

Hi,
I was wondering if it is common practice at musical theatre auditions for schools to give you the option on the audition form to consider being accepted into the acting program. I ask because I'm applying to both MT & acting programs, and I've had 2 MT auditions so far - both of which resulted in me checking off the acting/theater performance box on the audition form, being rejected from MT, and accepted into the acting programs instead. Some schools will only let you apply to one program, but then give you this option to consider another in the audition.

What MT programs offer this option at the audition? I'm specifically wondering about Ithaca, Syracuse, and Montclair, but I think this would be a good thread for anyone else in a similar boat.

The two schools I auditioned at already were UArts and Rider.

Ithaca is one of the ones to say that if you are interested in both, do the musical theatre audition, because the acting part is the same. Carnegie Mellon is the same.

I believe Syracuse still does this… meaning, allows a student to be considered for both MT and Acting. This is also the case at CMU, and I think at Ithaca. At these schools the MT audition puts you in consideration for both programs, I believe.

I am not sure about Montclair.

I teach at JMU, and students may elect to be considered for MT and Acting, but are asked to indicate this at the time the audition is scheduled, and to address why they would like to be considered for both degree programs in the essay they bring with them. Like the schools above, students who want to be considered for both programs complete the MT audition, but are considered for both.

^^ I’m pretty sure this is the case at Otterbein also.

Montclair does allow you to audition for both programs (MT and Acting), but be careful of this. If you truly want to major in MT there, then audition for MT only. The Dept. wants students who are focused on one BFA or the other, not those looking for a “backup” plan to get in. Also, be aware that at Montclair, they offer spots on a rolling basis; they don’t wait until all the auditions dates are completed to make offers, so spots become limited as each date passes.

^Also, if you do choose to be considered for both, which you can advise on the day of your appt., they are two separate auditions, with different requirements. Check their website for current audition requirements for each BFA program.

During the audition cycle 2 years ago, Webster and CMU considered those who are auditioning, for both MT and Acting, if they wished, along with Syracuse, Ithaca, University of Northern Colorado and Otterbein.

Coastal Carolina University as well. And I know Texas State did a few years ago. Not sure if they still do or not.

While I believe most will allow you to consider Acting, most (in my experience) will not allow an unsuccessful audition as acceptance into the BA major. Do be aware of this loophole!

Was told when contacted Carnegie Mellon - that no you are only considered for MT when you audition for MT.

At the Roosevelt audition my D was asked if she wanted to be considered for both MT and acting BFA and she said yes. The same for Rider.

Western Michigan lets you audition for both

Just realized we are answering a post from 2012! Well maybe bumping it will help a newbie!

Carnegie has made offers to people for acting when they have only auditioned MT.
