Schools that really like Extra curriculars, Course rigor, and Awards

My courseload is intense, my extra curriculars are amazing (Started a nonprofit, multiple newspaper recognition, 5 notable internships, president of teen council, serve on my youth advisory board, service awards, etc). I got some pretty nice awards recently. However, my gpa is a 3.55 uw and a 4-4.1 (w) {This is for the end of my junoir year] SAT: about a 2000

I take the hardest courses in my school, my school has some deflation, and my school has been known to be very hard. New teachers and students comment about it when they get here. My counselors have even said that a low gpa here would be a very high gpa in other public schools). Are there any schools that would excuse my low gpa and my average SAT scores for my amazing extra curriculars, awards, and course rigor? Im not too picky. Im really trying to keep my options wide open. I prefer a school that has great career and job placement, not to stressful, near a town or city, and small to medium sized. However, im open to anything. Financial aid is an iffy. Im a triplet. But my parents make 300,000 combined. But my dad keeps saying "i wont pay for ur college. Take loans" but my mom always says that hes joking and that if i get into a good school, they will pay.

Sorry if i come across as arrogant and naive. I apologize. I totally didnt intend to come across like that

What do you want to major in? My D had similar stats to yours, she had a great experience at Dickinson. Got some pretty good merit aid, too.

With your stats, you can probably find an automatic full ride somewhere to use as a safety if your parents refuse to contribute anything.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-14.html</a> (see post #205 for a list)

Business (Love it, but not practical)
Dentistry (Practical, and I dont really mind it)

Could you give me some specific schools (as examples), if you would be so kind
Schools that would give me an automatic full ride (but seriously i dont need that. If its pretigous my parents will pay. If its not, they wont pay…and might disown me :stuck_out_tongue: but seriously…)

Business or Dentistry

What are some of the other schools that your daughter got into?

What is your SAT CR+M or ACT composite?

In any case, just compare your GPA and test scores to those listed in the linked thread to see what schools may give you a full ride.

1390

I see. Thanks!

Looks like the following may be possibilities from that list:

University of Louisiana-Monroe
Coppin State University
Jackson State University
North Carolina Central University
Prairie View A&M University
Florida A&M (if in-state)

You may want to see if you can get a 32 or higher on the ACT (or 10 more SAT CR+M points) to open up a few more possibilities from that list:

Louisiana Tech University
Newberry College

And Alabama with a 32 full tuition.

Maybe i’m being to idealistic and naive, but I was hoping for some more notable schools like University of Michigan or NYU.

Would Tufts University and Wash U in St.Louis be to much of a reach?

I mean ill be taking 9 ap classes by the time i graduate. And 9 honors as well. I know it sounds stupid, but I was hoping for some better schools  Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? I mean my senoir year grades could possibly help? And study till my SAT is better?

Other than GPA and SAT, whats preventing me from better schools?

A 3.5 UW GPA is not bad, you certainly have a shot at schools that are better known than the ones that were mentioned above, those were mentioned as being ones where your grades/scores are good enough to get a “full-ride”.
You can use the college search tool here on CC to get more ideas on where your GPA/scores give you a good chance of admission. [College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential - College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/index.htm)
Your parents should run an EFC calculator to see what their expected contribution is. Although their income is high, it is worth seeing how that calculates out with triplets all in the college at the same time.
And to answer the original question, the more prestigious the school, the more likely your “amazing” EC’s are going to be considered just average. Further they don’t “make up for” an expected GPA. For any particular college, find their Common Data Set and look at the tables in section C to see how important EC’s are, and how your stats compare to admitted students.

Why is Business not practical? You said small to medium sized… but mentioned Umich. A bit confused by that.

I think you’d have a good shot at NYU and Mich. Your GPA is a bit low for mich… but if your school is as rigorous as you say, they may give you some leeway. I don’t think Tufts would be too much of a reach, although I don’t know for sure. WUSTL is also possible (although unlikely, I imagine). I would also consider Georgetown, Indiana, UT Austin, Virginia, Boston College, Carnegie Mellon, William & Mary, Northeastern, Boston U, USC, Case Western, and Minnesota. Some of those are pretty safe, such as Indiana and Minnesota. Others are a bit reachy. Some are smaller and some larger. All very solid business programs (sorry I don’t know much about dentistry). All near towns/cities (I think…)

This:

No or little financial aid, and parents unwilling to pay the expected family contribution => you need a large merit scholarship. You won’t be able to borrow anywhere near the cost of attendance by yourself, nor would you want to.

I can’t imagine where you got this impression. I have a business degree, and have made a fantastic living through the years compared to many of my college peers who majored in less practical areas. Trust me, it is VERY practical. Especially if you hustle for work experience and internships during your summers. You will dust pretty much everyone except the engineers in earning power if you do. And if you love it, it will also show.

I really do love it. trust me. However, ive been recently reading about how everyone majors in Business and how people with MBAs are unemployed. Im quite scared of being unemployed in my future. Medicine is always a great field to go into, since there isnt as low unemployment (as i assume). I love managing this nonprofit/business. It really taught me how much I love management. However, I would rather go with dentistry as a safe choice, then risk going into Business. I guess im just afraid of unemployment and failure :(

I keep reading about all these stories of unemployed people with great degrees from great schools. I really do want to be successful. I do work for my internships. Many people in my area are very wealthy and have connections. They can get an internship if they ask thier parents. My parents arent like that. They dont care abotu internships or my nonprofit. They just care about grades/SAT scores. At this point, they think im a complete, lazy idiot. Thats why I really want to get into a good school, to prove them wrong and so I can have a bigger chance of success. If i get into a good school, they will pay fully. Ive already saved up about 6000$ from working. A few thousand more from bday money. 5000$ dollars if i get some of the internships i want for this summer. Im already applying for scholarships. I want to be as economcially independent as I can be, from my parents. We dont get along :/

WUSTL would be a dream, really. Should i apply RD, so i can hopefully boost my gpa with senoir year grades?

how much of a reach is Tufts?
I said those are qualities i prefer. Honestly, im not that picky at the moment (which im sure is pretty foolish of me).
I would prefer a school that doesnt have a preppy atmosphere as well(i know that is picky, but i would love that if possible. If not, then its fine)

UMich has a good name, dentistry school, business school, and I like the school overall. It may not fit some of my desires, but who am i to be picky, really.

I truly appreciate your reply. Thanks for taking the time and effort. I really appreciate it :D

If i got into a good school, they would surely pay. Ive also saved up a few thousand. I have a few more thousand from bday money and probably graduation money. And ill be working senoir year and summer of junoir year, so Im hoping for a couple more thousand (with the right internships).

I know Ill need more, but I havent even applied for scholarships or awards yet (for service activity. Im hoping to get a few with my nonprofit work). Ive already complied a list of 21 scholarships that I need to apply to in Senoir year and a list of 10 scholarships/essays to start applying to now as a junoir

I live in VA btw. Which schools that you mentioned would be safties, matches, reaches, and high reaches

Thanks for you reply! I love the fact that you gave me a list of schools  Thats exactly what I wanted. Someone reccomended that I look into Dickinson College, with my stats and extra curriculars

thanks for the reply! You totally destressed me :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks, ill be sure to do so! And im hoping to expand my nonprofit. WE’ve been starting fundraising, and im trying to buy tablets and MP3 players to put the educational videos I make and the audio recordings of books I do, onto. Im going to send those to a few schools/shelters within the USA and outside the USA (im working with a group of students on translating the recordings and educational videos)
