I am currently finishing up my Junior year and I was wondering if you guys knew any good schools that I could get into with my grades and scores. I don't really have the best grades overall, but I am really good at what I like and really excited to actually focus on something in college. Currently I think I am looking at around 3.0 Unweighted GPA or a little lower at the end of this year, although I am an IB Diploma candidate. So here are my stats:

A's in Math and Woodworking
B's in History and Biology
C's in French and English

1930 in January SAT (670 640 620) I will take it again
31 on ACT

Varsity Athlete in Football, Swimming, Baseball. I would be interested in playing DIII or maybe DII football but I would be content to go to a big DI school and not play.

Very interested in Political Science.

I am currently looking at:

Wesleyan
Amherst
Williams
University of Virginia (out of state)
Berkeley (In state)
UNC (out of state)
Gilford
Claremont Mckenna

So are there more schools I should look at, and does it look like I can get into these ones?

sorry, but you won’t get into any of the schools other than maybe guilford which would be a match, not a safety. i would advise you to be a little more realistic with your school choices.

All of those schools (except for Guilford) would be heavy reaches with your stats. With that said, if you’re a recruited athlete, and can write some excellent essays, you may stand a chance. Maybe.

Being recruited for football could go a long way for you. With out a major hook like being a recruited athelete I dont think you have much of a chance at any of the schools you are looking at.

What state are you in? Guilford is around a 3.1 accepted average, but the other schools are reaches. The athletic hook can go a long way, but the schools you’ve listed will have mostly athletes with at least a 3.5 avg and above. Your SAT score is good though and that will give you an advantage if you apply to target schools, and using the athletics as your hook. Use the CC college search tool and put in all scores, states, and athletic interest. You are right, you could find an athletic scholarship, but you need to lower the bar a bit in terms of the colleges you have on your list.

Check out Catholic University of America in DC. They have a great Politics Department and a great location in DC. They also have a good Div III football program and the students are great supporters of the team despite being only Div III. It is a good school (although not of the caliber of the other schools that you mentioned) and has an 85% acceptance rate, so it is at least a good choice as a safety school. Jackuk

Google the name of the school+common data set and look at the stats for the admitted students at each school. It will help you calibrate your chances of admission. As others have said, you have a lot of reaches on your list.

Ha ha screen name…jstrachen= stretching? These schools are beyond a stretch; even recruited athletes at most of these have better stats, especially GPA.

Could you afford the $40,000/year it costs for OOS students?

You would have a better chance at Occidental than Claremont McKenna. It would still be a reach, but less of one. Occidental has decent poly sci. Also, check out Univ of Redlands. You are a match for Univ of the Pacific in Stockton. Not sure how much of a boost football will give you at the UC’s. Maybe give you a shot at UC Davis? Otherwise, Sacramento State would be a good choice for football and poly sci.
