Ok, I'm a sophomore in my 2nd semester at FIU. My first year, I went to UIowa but was forced to come back due to mental health issues. The thing is, is that I hate it at FIU and Florida in general and I want to get out of here again but my problem is that I did poorly this semester ending with a 2.21 GPA. This isn't like me as I was able to make honors college at Iowa. I'm probably going to take a semester off of school to work and focus on my health though. And after my break I was thinking of going to CC OOS to raise my GPA then go to the actual school to graduate or is this not a good idea? Anyway, here are some of the schools I am looking at: UCBerkely(stretch) Carnegie Mellon(stretch), UCLA, UCSanDiego, UCIrvine, CalTech, Cal Poly, Harvey Mudd, UMich, Case Western, etc. It may seem like I'm mostly looking at Cali but really I'm just used to the ocean and I'm open to anything. Any suggestions? Things to consider: Female, black, DO NOT want a commuter school, pretty much want a school like Iowa but with more racial diversity. Would also appreciate financial aid.

Sorry, but there really is no decent financial aid for OOS transfer students in California. The state is broke. The priorities in monies go to California residents first and foremost. You would be looking at $50K per year after all of your expenses are calculated. CalTech is about $60K per year and is really tough to get in, as are most of the UC’s. Cal Poly will probably run about $30-40K. Harvey Mudd is also expensive but may have more private dollars to fund financial aid.

aunt bea is correct about the OOS publics, expect high OOS tuition and little to no need based FA as a transfer. FA at privates will depend on your financial situation and the FA policy for transfers, which varies from school to school.

Take the time out to take care of yourself, then reassess your options keeping costs in mind.
