At which schools can SAT/ACT scores counter the effects of a below average GPA? Are there schools that will value a student with great SAT/ACT scores?

Thanks for the help.

1) i dont really know, but schools like the university of chicago and reed come to mind (im probably wrong on those though… )
2) i think all schools value someone with high SAT scores.

The University of California campuses will admit a student based solely upon their SAT scores if there were reasons why the GPA may have been less than stellar. They even give information on how to apply based solely upon the SAT scores here:

[UC Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/exam_eligibility.html)

The test scores you get will determine which UC campus you are likely to be admitted to–but there is not a “chart” for this. Just presume higher scores = UC Berkeley or UCLA to minimum scores = UC Riverside or UC Merced

^ Actually, the more competitive campuses (UCB and UCLA) generally tend to deemphasize test scores. I think they mainly look at your grades; the reason why they have the “eligibility by examination alone” is more to allow good students to apply even though they didn’t fully complete the a-g subject requirements. If you also look at that chart, the only kids who can apply that way are those with really good scores.

Also, keep in mind those are eligibility requirements to apply, not to get admitted. How you get admitted is very much holistic.

Look at the list of the ranking schools by SAT scores. (I think thats either on this forum or the college admissions forum) While that isn’t fully accurate, it is a start.

Thanks.
bump

Reed will indeed sometimes admit a student with a low GPA if the SAT/ACT is very high, the writing samples are excellent, and the recs are consistent with the GPA and test scores.

^I’ve also heard that about JHU and Carnegie Mellon
