I’m an upcoming senior, and I currently have a 30 ACT(34E, 33M, 29R, 25S). I plan on taking it again in September, but I don’t want to bank on having a much higher score. I’m also planning on taking subject tests in US history and math level ii. So far my stats look like this:
Asian American in Kansas
4.0 GPA
Rank: 1 out of 200ish
AP Chem
AP US History - 5
AP Lang + Comp
AP Calc AB - 4
AP US Gov.
AP Lit.
Took 3 classes (physics, calc, writing) at local university
ECs:
Attended girl’s math camp at UNL
Senior Class President
Editor for Newspaper
Treasurer for key club chapter
JV tennis - 2 years
HOSA - qualified for nationals
Currently working with professor at local university for cancer research
Are these good assumptions to make about the colleges I plan on applying to?
Safety:
University of Kansas
Match:
Barnard
Babson
Brandeis
UIUC
Reach:
Vassar
Cornell
Amherst
Tufts
I believe some of your reach schools possible such as Vassar and Tufts. A 30 ACT isn’t idea but isn’t horrible. If you are able to bump it to 32 you could really have a shot at Cornell and Amherst. 30 OOS at public schools such as University of Michigan may be a no go if you decide to apply to another public. Same with top UCS such as Berkeley and UCLA. Get the score to a 32, you’d be very competitive. But overall GPA tells more of a story than ACT.

4.0 UW and 4.3 W. I go to a relatively small and obscure school in a small town in kansas.
I think you have a decent list of schools, as long as you like them all and can afford to attend without taking on too much debt. I might call Brandeis, Barnard and OOS at UIUC high matches, but even so they are still match-range.
I also think that coming from Kansas might give you a slight advantage for the out-east private schools in that they tend to pursue geographical diversity. Kansas isn’t North Dakota, but I imagine it’s still at least a small bump vs. if your home state were New York.
To improve your chances at (what I call…) those high matches and your four reach schools, improving that ACT by a couple of points would likely help.
Thanks! I hope to improve at least 1-2 points. Vassar and Tufts also superscore, so I hope that helps me out when I’m applying.
