Schools with an audio recording/musical tech based major?

I'm soon to begin my senior year of high school and have just embarked on the quest for the perfect college. My "holy grail" school would -

-have some sort of program/major involving the technical aspects of music - recording, producing, etc.

-still have a diverse subject range (i.e. NOT a strictly engineering school), as I'm not 100% committed to the above

-preferably be mid-sized

-be located at the most eight hours in any direction from southern ohio.

But, I understand too that grails aren't meant to be reached; only striven for. In that case, if anyone has information about any school offering an audio recording program... guide on, Merlin.

Take a look through the thread here, and the other links within.

Part of the issue is finding these programs tends to be in the nomenclature, as they are called by different names at different schools. Are you looking into a more science/engineering type program based on sound and acoustics, or a more music centered curriculum? Some institutions actually offer both. For example, UHartford/Hartt has two, one a BM music concentration within Hartt, and a BS through the U/Hartford school of engineering.
Just be aware that a number of the music directed programs have an audition based (and in a few cases, portfolio submission) criteria.

The link to the aes site in the linked thread may prove helpful, there’s a list of schools by geographic region.

If you’re looking at music centered programs, consider the option at UMich/Ann Arbor detailed a bit here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062381799-post68.html</a>, or possibly Oberlin’s TIMARA program. These may or may not be what you seek.

Wow. A lot of that sounded like what I was looking for in a school. I can give you a school that fits all but one of those requirements.

The University of Miami (Florida)

obviously, the one it doesn’t fit is the distance. But here is how it fits all the others.

There are two technical aspects to the audio. Music Engineering is based through the school of music, does require an audition, music classes, etc. but focuses on the recording studio a lot. Audio Engineering is based through the college of engineering, has no audition, is more heavy in the sciences and maths, but covers recording as well as the science behind it all. The degree would be electrical engineering with an audio concentration.

UM is definitely not an engineering only school. If you decide engineering isn’t for you, there are more than enough other programs that you wont have to transfer just because you change majors.

Miami is not huge but its not tiny. You can look up the statistics if you want to know more, I think we are at about 10,000 students.

While it is obviously farther than you were looking for, this means a) better weather (where else can you study for your december finals in your swim suit) b) great financial aid options. Yes, it is private, but there are numerous need based AND merit based awards available c) a great city for the music industry… need I say more and d) a audio/music list serve sponsered by our program and alumni that emails to all of us students. I get at least 2 job emails a day, with gigs, internships, and long-term positions.

If you have any questions on the audio based programs in Miami, feel free to let me know. I know I had the hardest time finding audio programs so the best of luck to you.

Some to possibly check into are Ithaca, American, NYU and Hartford.

Take a look at Elon University in North Carolina! I’ve heard they have a great program.
