I'm really interested in Creative Writing, but I really haven't seen many schools with it as an actual major. I would definitely do a double major in that and English (my parents are strict and would die if I only majored in Creative Writing), but are there any good schools that have Creative Writing as a major? Sorry--"good" is pretty subjective, but I just haven't really come across many highly ranked schools with Creative Writing as a major (aside from Oberlin, which I'm looking into). Thanks for the help!

At many schools, CW is a concentration w/in an English major; often you must apply and be accepted at the end of soph year. Many top schools have something similar to this, just off the top of my head: Yale, Brown, UMichigan.

p.s. at some schools (eg. Y), you must submit samples to be accepted to writing workshops, but you don’t have to be an English major to be admitted; at others you either do have to be in English or preference is given to English majors.

Oh, okay! Thanks!

Many outstanding writing programs (like Kenyon) don’t have CW majors. [Creative Writing at Kenyon - The Kenyon Review - Kenyon College](http://www.kenyon.edu/x23958.xml)

dev, I wouldn’t worry so much about whether creative writing is a major or a concentration within the English deparmtne. You want to take a look at the courses offered and who’s on the faculty. Many schools have accomplished, published writers and poets on their faculty – either tenured or visiting. This is true of just about every LAC. Swarthmore has Jonathan Franzen and Adrienne Rich. Williams has Jim Shepard and Andrea Barrett. Bard has Mona Simpson and Francine Prose. Skidmore has Steven Milhauser. Etc, etc.

Basically if you pick a school with a strong English department that is overall a good fit for you in environment and culture, and you will find a writer lurking in the facutly. If you pick an LAC you will actually get close to that person as a teacher and a mentor.

Knox College isn’t among the top-ranked LAC’s, but its Creative Writing program is competitive with the best in the nation and Creative Writing is one of the most popular majors on campus.
Thanks, everyone! That was very helpful!
