We have ben scouring the boards here trying to get a feel for schools that are known for both programs in MT and Acting. We have come up with the following:

syracuse
ccm
otterbein
webster

Are there others that we have missed? WE know a number of schools have both programs, but sometimes one or the other is considered the strong program.....D will definitely have those on her list too....

…of course CMU…don’t know how i left that one off!

I didn’t realize UCLA was known for its MT program…we are west coasters, so its definitely on the radar for acting…

We will look into Ithaca and UArts…thank you.

I was under he impression, and my be an incorrect one, that something happened this last year with the MT studio at NYU…it was in transition or something similar…so waiting to see wha happens there.

at NYU the New Studio is for Acting & Musical Theatre. The students will follow the acting curriculum together from what I gather from the website.

Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University has strong programs in both MT and Acting. I am a freshman musical theatre major at Roosevelt, and I can tell you that the MT and Acting programs have a lot of overlap. Feel free to contact me if anyone would like specific information. I’d love to help!

At UArts, for the first 5 semesters, acting and MT majors are mixed into the same core Acting Studio classes. They also take some of the same speech and movement classes but not necessarily at the same time.

Another question to be asked is whether the programs in Acting and MT are separate, with different faculties, different courses, and different productions, or mixed. For example, we take 8 in Acting and 8 in MT to make a single acting class. Same faculty teach the students; the curricula are similar; and everyone auditions for plays and musicals alike. Other schools have stand-alone programs. Both approaches are valid, but prospective students should understand the differences in approach.

Just to follow up on drjohn’s good point, at UArts, not only are the MT and Acting students in the same core acting studio classes together for the 1st 5 semesters, but all acting and MT students audition for all of the shows put on by the department and acting students can get roles in musicals as well as MT students get roles in plays.

Thank you for your reply…you hit the nail on the head, Actually! My D feels she could be equally happy in either an MT or Acting program, but feels like she would like the “other” components to be available to her and of high quality. So, yes i guess we are looking, in part, at programs where the mt faculty classes are available to those in acting and and the acting coursework/faculty are available to those in MT.

I would be interested in your opinion on the merits of a program that blends the two, to some degree, the way it sounds like Otterbein and Uarts does.

You forgot Emerson. Emerson has both MT and Acting (BA and BFA). And everyone can audition for the Musicals, regardless of what they do. Emerson is in Boston, Mass.

I’m happy to see UCLA on this list… I’m the little voice trying to get the word out in this sea of Nor’Easters! Ha ha! Chrissyblu, the UCLAMom (Go Bruins, Go Bears!)
