Schools with excellent Comm/Social Science/Arts programs in/near a thriving city?

I am a freshman at a community college - I'm looking to transfer.

Possible majors - Journalism, Photography, Anthropology, Political Science, International Studies/Relations, etc. You get my drift, hopefully.

I love photography, writing, enjoying the aesthetic beauty of nature, family, kid's movies, good food. I'm not sporty. I like stimulating my mind but wouldn't feel comfortable in a pretentious environment, either. I'm not the life of the party, but I'm invigorated by being in a culturally thriving city that I would explore and be inspired by. I do not want to be in a bubble during college.

Medium-sized school would be best. I wouldn't want to drown in a sea of students but it would be a little uncomfortable to be at a school that's so small that everyone knows everyone.

I didn't really apply myself in high school but have been getting mostly A's in community college, so a school that would overlook high school and focus on my college work would be good.
Thanks for your suggestions.

HS GPA: sub-2.0
College GPA: above 3.5
SAT:
1st sitting: 800 WR/720 CR/560 M
2nd sitting: 690 WR/740 CR/650 M

BTW - I am in Portland, Oregon right now and I'm originally from the Bay Area of California. Colleges on the West Coast would be a plus, but don't let that stop you from suggesting others!!!

Have you asked this in the Transfer Forum? You might get some good suggestions there. Here’s the link: [Transfer Students - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/) The thread near the top of that forum titled “Transfer Admissions 101” has lots of useful information.

The first thing, is to find out which colleges and universities have articulation agreements with your CC. If any of those more-or-less meet your requirements, you can use them as your Academic Safety. You also need to sort out the financials. Do you need to stay within a particular budget, or is the sky the limit? Talk that over with your parents and/or whoever else is helping you pay for your education.

Is there a Phi Theta Kappa chapter at your CC, and will you qualify for membership? Lots of places have scholarship money (sometimes big, sometimes small) for PTK members. If you look through that list, it might give you some more ideas of places that would work for you academically as well as financially. Here is the PTK website: [Phi Theta Kappa - Honor Society](http://www.ptk.org/)

Is there a good transfer office at your CC? If so, the counselors there should be able to help you find out which colleges/universities don’t consider your HS record for transfer admissions. Many don’t. If your transfer office is not helpful, here is a link to the transfer office website at Happykid’s community college. Some of the information only applies to students in Maryland, but most of it would be useful for any CC student: [Counseling & Advising | Transferring](http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/tertiary1.aspx?urlid=67)

Wishing you all the best!

Thanks for the advice, I posted this topic there now! And the steps you outlined are very helpful, I’ll talk more to the transfer office.
