I know this isn't the best criteria to pick a school by, but there's definitely something more enticing with this type of architecture. Anyway, I know a lot of people say to pick safeties you'll be happy with, and I think one of the things that will make me happy (aside from a lot of $$$ from a school :)) is a gothic-y, northeastern old-school type feel. I'm talking about the type of architecture at Yale, for example (excluding morse and stiles I think..). I know this is probably ridiculous, and it' seeming even more ridiculous as I type. So anyway, here are my stats, I realize that there are probably a lot of schools like this. I'm looking to major in bio, i might do pre-med but then again maybe not.

er my stats, in short: 2150 SAT (retaking.. hoping for improvement), 730+ Sat2s (US, Bio, Math2), rank top 1%, from NY, south asian male, ECs in science research (submitting stuff to intel/westinghouse), science olympiad captain, math league captain, model congress vp, nhs vp, instrument for 9 years (no awards here, and I didn't make all state).

Haha, I am also partially choosing safeties based on this reasoning, so I totally understand how you're feeling. You're got a great personality in print, btw, I liked you just from reading this! :) You'll probably have a good shot at your reach schools just for that alone.

Rhodes in Memphis, TN, Villanova in Pennsylvania, and University of Mary Washington in VA (public so big money saver, hooray!) are absolutely GORGEOUS gothic safety schools for you. They definitely have a New England feel even though they aren't in New England! I might also consider the University of San Diego for it's amazingly beautiful Spanish architecture, not to mention amazing weather. :)

Wellesley is the perfect match of Gothic and hard sciences if you are a girl, if you aren't damn too bad, if I was a girl, I'd go there too...wait no I wouldn't, my sisters there, yuck, four more years of my sister :p

The hard part about this is that gothic generally goes hand-in-hand with prestige b/c that usually means it has aged, and most colleges age like wine, so I couldn't think of a college in the Northeast with gothinc architecture that could possibly be a safety.

Swat has some gothic architecture and the most beautiful campus EVER!

I must have missed the gothic architecture when I tour Swartmore:
http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/Biology/positions/swarthmore.jpg

There's the bell tower and that's about it.

I think he want's something like this

perhaps not a stretch, I always thought of Duke as the southern gothic rock pile. I bit too much for my taste....built I believe not so long ago (relative to the high point of Gothic) to match those northern competitors.

hey semiserious, thanks! it's good to know we aren't alone in our (perhaps?) crazy rationale. maybe it isn't so crazy. i like duke, and i'm applying there, but i think it's more of a reach for me than a safety :). and cre8tive, that's BC, right? I was thinking that could be my match, but I'm not sure - is there a big emphasis on religion there, or something? Then again, I wouldn't mind going to a school even if I was a tiny minority in religion. I also wish i was a girl. Wait, that came out wrong; I wish I could go to swat, but unfortunately I can't. Semi, thanks sooo much for that list, I'm looking at all of them right now! :D

That would be Boston College, and I'd say that the relgious influence is minimal compared to other catholic schools like Notre Dame, actually on a tour of BC, they said that the visibility of religion is so low, that they say the majority of their applicants are not aware of its affiliation with the Roman Catholic church, don't know how they figured that out.

Haverford's very pretty, although I wouldn't call it a safety school. Like the other posts said: too bad you're not a girl because Bryn Mawr and Rosemont in PA have some REALLY cool gothic architecture. I second the earlier post that recommended Villanova - it's got a really nice campus.

Boston College, Duke, Georgetown, Princeton, and parts of UPENN.

I LOVE, love, LOVE Yale's architecture.

Princeton is has one of the most prolific neo-Gothic campuses.

About Boston College (my favorite match): the religious prevelence on campus is very, very low. Many students are unaware of the religious affilition right up until after they send in their apps! The school is liberal-leaning for a Catholic institution but is more moderate on the scale of colleges (which gets tipped to the liberal side thanks to places like Oberlin and Lewis & Clark, haha). Also, the school is Jesuit, which means that the emphasis is on teaching with a commitment to service, which means more than just Jesus. :)

Yale and Princeton

Hehe, a friend and I raced down the main path to Nassau Hall, then played tag behind it...

Whig Hall reminds me of a cheap Parthenon-wannabe. I was there for Princeton's High School Moot Court Tournament. I remember practicing my part with my partner on the steps resting against one of the polls... God I love that place.

Me too. I visited for the first time last month and just fell in love. Now I just have to get in. :)

I live about 30 seconds away right now. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing :P. A friend of mine who's going next year said it's completely different as a Princeton student though.

Sewanee is very gothic.
