Hello! I'm a straight A student with a love of theatre, but also a love of history, english... basically I have an interest in other academic subjects as well. Although I know that I want to major in acting/ theatre arts, I was hoping that I might get some good input on schools that also have great academics and would give me the opportunity to double major, or atleast programs that aren't a conservatory but have great theatre departments and academics. Help!

I’m not sure about double-majoring, but I know UCLA and Northwestern both have great BA Theatre programs with a strong academic emphasis. Both are really respectable, as well.

I’d add USC as well. They do require auditions for both their BA and BFA acting programs. The BA program allows for a double major. Northwestern isn’t an audition program, so if you get into the school you can choose to major in theatre.

If you’re looking for a smaller school - liberal arts school - with great academics and a wonderful theater program - look at Skidmore. Great theater dept with lots of opportunities to be involved - either on or off stage. Anyone on campus can be involved - you don’t have to be a theater major. Skidmore is a non-audition program - you can choose to major in theater once you are there. Starting next year they will also be offering an Arts Administration minor for those interested in the business end of theater.
Other academics are great - they welcome double majors or major/minor. Also have a self-determined major for those who can’t fit what they want to learn/do into the majors already offered.
It’s worth a look.

SC offers the opportunity to study theatre in a university setting. It is in the center of the entertainment industry. There is collaboration among the schools of music, theatre and cinematic arts. The student body is extremely diverse, with international students from about 100 countries.
