Schools with great concert scenes

which schools have a great concert scene? i'm looking for lots of indie rock/ "hipster" music. thanks.

Probably major cities like Chicago, NY, Boston, Austin TX

I’m most likely biased, but outside of really major cities like Chicago, NYC, and LA, Austin is really he best place for concerts. I mean, it’s nicknamed the “Live Music Capital of the World”. Austin City Limits in the fall is a ginormous music festival, and in the spring South by Southwest takes place there as well, with music and more. Lots of bands stop by Austin on tour, and if they don’t they’ll almost certainly stop somewhere else a short roadtrip away, like Dallas or Houston. Plus the local music scene is great as well.

State flagships, particularly those in major cities, often attract well known, as well as smaller, bands. UCLA just gave out a bunch of free tickets for an upcoming on campus Macklemore concert.

If you’re fine with going off campus for concerts and whatnot, just look at schools in or around major cities. I know that plenty of students at Emory rent a zip car or split a cab if there’s a concert in Atlanta. My friend at Lewis & Clark (a LAC just outside of Portland) regularly takes public transit when a band he likes is playing in Portland.

well, believe it or not, you might want to take a look in Iowa at Grinnell College. They have a well-funded concert committee and bring in performers all year, free for the students.

Here’s from [Grinnell Concerts |](http://grinnellconcerts.com), where you can learn more about who they bring to campus:

“Grinnell has a long history of bringing great music out to the middle of Iowa. From a young Bruce Springsteen in the ’70s to the little unknown band The Smashing Pumpkins in the ’90s, Grinnell has strived to showcase the cutting edge of popular music and beyond.”

Thanks everyone. If this helps, I’m looking to major in environmental science or environmental biology at a top LAC.

NYCK -
This article is about four years old, but my sense is that Wesleyan’s reputation in the rock world has only grown since then:

[The Wesleyan Mafia: MGMT, Boy Crisis, Amazing Baby - Page 1 - Music - New York - Village Voice](http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-08-04/music/the-wesleyan-mafia-mgmt-boy-crisis-amazing-baby/)

Oberlin is a top LAC with a great environmental science department and a vibrant music scene. But it isn’t particularly convenient to big arenas, if that’s what you want.

You could look at a variety of colleges that are reasonably close to major cities. If you have a car on campus, or one of your friends does, making a trip to a city I assume is not difficult.
Maybe you should first run some college searches, like the CC one or bigfuture.org, and then check out the location of every single school. Grinnell presumably has a very active campus, so do many mid-sized LACs (like 2000 and above).
